What is the value of vespene gas? How much minerals is it worth? We have been talking a little about it in the chat and we came up with the idea to post something on the forum. Some people said that 100 gas = 100 minerals but I think it is more valuable, more like 100 gas = 150 minerals...

What what do you people think?
1: If there was only minerals on the map and you had to buy gas, what would be an ok and acceptable prize for it?
2: If the map has a good amount of minerals and a normal amount of gas, how precious would it be?
3: If all patches of minerals and vespene geysers could give an infinite amount?

Please, I'd really like a number or ratio for this. I know people have done that for wood in Warcraft 3 so it should be possible...

well, gas lasts forever, but minerals dont, and if its late in the game, and theres only very few minerals left, then i think that they're more worth it, but also it matters about the maps mineral/gas ratio

It's much harder to collect vespene gas than minerals in the game and from a lore point of view since all races need a specialized building needed to gather the gas that obviously it is more rare and requires more to get it. So yeah I would say gas is definetly worth more than minerals.

Also gas can only collected one worker at a time, which also increases its value over minerals. But when the geyser depletes, there's still an infinite supply of gas, so at that point it's either equal or less valuable than minerals.

Also, you have to take into account that you have to spend money before you can collect gas. Before you can even collect gas you must spend 100 minerals on a gas building and then a collector. You can either buy a new one for 50 ( don't forget you usually get 3-4) or set one of your already built one to collect. However, due to opportunity cost, I think buying a new one would be cheaper, seeing as you can replace the minerals by continuing collecting minerals while you gas collector builds....wow, that actually is starting to confuse me.

If I had to put a price on gas, It would be curved based on time. Being more valuable at the beginning when there is a short supply and dropping as the game went on. However, I don't think an equation can be made, because when it goes to infinity and the minerals run out, you can still collect gas, making the minerals more valuable.

GAH! too many variables....I didn't even begin on collection rates.....this could almost be my Calculus final...lol

have you noticed that only one worker works at a mineral too?

    anyway on topic

it depends what kind of situation you are in
if the map is lacking minerals, then gas would be worth less
if the map has good amount of minerals and normal amount of gas, then gas would worth more

    gas DO last forever
when it depletes you can still get gas but more little than usual

I meant that there's usually only one geyser per expansion site compared to about 10 or 12 mineral patches. So technically there's only one worker getting gas for every 10 or 12 workers getting minerals.

it does get depleted but it does not explode unlike warcraft gold mine.so that means that you can still gather gas but at a smaller amount.oh wait if your talking about the vespene gas on the site then,im talking about the starcraft game, sorry.oh wait.now im confused, are you talking about the starcraft game or the site?

I think it also play a role what matches it is like:

If you play TvsZ the terran dont need so much gas (MM lets say 5 marines per medic =300m and 25 g right? add one tank its till low gat cost per mineral, therefore mineral is more important)
But if its TvsP The terran needs more gas (Tanks is the main units, costing a good amount of gas)

But i think its very hard to set in on a radio like 100 : 150 because of all those differant situatioens, and like some other said, minerals dont las forever

    Beware
Based upon theoretics and also considering time i estimate that 100 minerals = 125 gas, ish. its really just an educated guess.

Personally, Gas > Minerals. Unless your at a 0 clut map, Gas is going to be a pain to get, so I would say 1 mineral = 3 gas.
