What to do when opponent's base is full of Photon Cannons

    Hello,,

I've noticed this quite a few times, and every time i make the same stupid mistake..
I go in for harass / kill and i notice his base is full of photon cannons, i try to take out some pylons so his cannons will be deactivated, but meanwhile im getting shot by stalkers aswell..

I don't like to wait for the opponent to attack, but i guess i have to when he does this?
    Your thoughts about it?

If he's spending a ton of minerals on the production of static defense, that's a sign for you to expand!
He most likely only has a small force, so you can easily get map control. Just expand, outproduce and then overwhelm him. Should be a piece of cake. :D

hold back and keep him inside his base. if that much money is spent on cannons, his army can't be that big- he probably won't be able to leave his base for a while, and if you manage to keep him there as he's running out of minerals, he'll lose eventually.

sit your army near his entrance, but away from the cannons. you can expand. tech up to colossus with range upgrade. just keep an eye out for warp prisms, just in case he does try to expand, don't let him. your army should be able to handle his.

well if he has a lot of cannons, means his army is pretty small. Taking into account that you are trying to attack early in the game, so you should snake your way into his base around the cannons, units are better than cannons, so if you have a lot, cannons should be rather easy to take out.

    late game:
colossus with upgrade can take out cannons easily because they outrange them. guardian shield is good too. Void raids can outrange them
    tanks/thors as well
if you are zerg, roaches and hydralisks are perfect

if your opponent has cannons and a decent size army, consider just expanding and taking out his expansions until he becomes broke OR maybe consider a doom drop of units in his base

In my opinion Photon cannons are cost wise far more efficient against early game units. As such a direct assault is probably going to be suicide. I have also learned if they go the turtling route then they are most likely teching to something nasty.

As such like everyone has already said expand, get a few detectors in case of dts, some anti void rays, and then just start pressing in with either tanks, collosi, or a swarm = dead turtle

I like how people are talking about late game against a turtler. They might last for a while, but with just 1 main base and no expos because of containment, there isn't going to be a late game for your opponent. ^^

Expo + 4-5 towers outside his ramp. make sure to have a counter to VR and you're set. Map control will be yours, you can either wait him out or just keep a constant pressure of immortals/VR/colossi (with range) on him... I get REALLY annoyed when someone turtles, I always win... and they complain about being towered in. Remember turtles are an endangered species :p

Also, make sure you scout well and avoid the situations where you block off the base only to have them sneak out and expo without you knowing.

I would also consider invisible units. A cannon turtler should have an observer but in the event that they do not it is worth a try since they can disable pylons and cause general mayhem

Invisible units are useless since the cannons can detect, and thus get shot away before they do much damage.

Pretty much just contain and expand to out mass them.

ya i would expand, and do some cheesy attack or attack with ranged units on a turtler.

However even turtles can go mass units and pumpout quick and attack midgame still with no expansion. I have done this on occasion usingthr 4 gate early game and turtling, with 8-14 gates mid game I pushed out gaining an expansion and simultaneously destroying the enemy. I got exact counters from my intel which is 50% of the win in this turtle strategy!

Depends where he has his cannons. If he massed his photon cannons in the front of his base you could make a drop where he has no cannons.

The good thing to know is that if he makes his forge and mass photon cannons(let's say 4) he spends money on defensive structures. Thus he has very few or even no units to defend against a drop(s).

You could either make a big drop with alot of units or a decent amount of harassing drops to take out his probes. This depending on scouting, because depending on what you see you will take the decision on either making a big drop or lots of harassment drops.

    Hope this helped out mate,

I would agree the "safest" bet is to go for an expansion, and keep them contained. If you're terran or protoss, it would be easy to add siege or collosi with range to your army, and blast him from afar. He wil have to attempt to engage your army and walk into the bulk of yours, or counter-attack and hopefully meet a similar fate. Play tactical and patient
