Blizzard has launched a new update for the Warcraft 3 Map Maker, furthing advancing the creation power of this tool, is this a sign of what is to come for Starcraft 2??

For those of you who love mapping for Warcraft 3 here is a transition guide written by karune for your viewing pleasure..

Im not quite sure what it all means because im not a mapper but i think its a exciting step towards the SC2 editor and that excites me :p

    Enjoy!!

I don't see the connection between improving the WC3 map editor and the SC2 map editor. AFAIK the two are completely different programs, using completely different methods, engines, etc. The only thing common in them is the developer, and since there will be no cross-compatibility between the two... could someone enlighten me how this is related to the SC2 editor?

The games may use different engines, but the raw data these engines use would have similarity. I imagine the sc2 maps are edited and created in much the same way as wc3 maps, and I wouldn't be surprised if the sc2 map file format is similarly structured also.

Situation: Blizzard probably had sc2 prototypes running in around 2005.
Problem: Need a map to build a test game.
Solution: 1. Make an editor to build their 3d test map. 2. Build our test map with a hacked worldedit.

Which seems more likely for testing an experimental engine that was changing from week to week?

Maybe, maybe not. But option 2 is what I would do because it's the obvious choice. And as this whole thing evolves, do thety bother to make a new editor or just keep hacking worldedit because it's the most direct choice?

So I think they could modify the worldedit code to make the new staredit, rather than remaking it from scratch... if they wanted to, that is.

I'm not saying that would be trivial, but it might be the easier option given that the bulk of the editor, (the complex interrelated sets of unit data) would be directly transferrable.

Upon examining the Blistering Sands map, you can see that the maps themselves appear to use much the same rectangular grid meshes, which again would be transferrable, albeit with some changes to the texturing information.

This was done because someone found a way to use JASS to do something that has a potential security leak, nothing to do with staredit 2.
