Although Blizzard hasn't finished with SC2 , we might as well suggest some units that needs a new name.

As we can see, during SC1's beta, alot of units underwent some name changes.

Here is a list of the unit that underwent some name changes:

    Marine - Marauder
    Carrier - Dreadnought
    Wraith - Phoenix
Scourge - Avenger ( They came out of overlords and guardians when they were destroyed. They AVENGED THEIR DEATHS)
    Reaver - Trilobyte
    Scarab - Reaver
Observer - Witness (I guess it 'WITNESSED' the battlefield)
    Templar - Dragoon
    Mutalid - Mutalisk
    Lurker - Sunken
    Hive - Queens nest
Evolution chamber - Spore colony (that looked weird)
    Armory - Chemical plant
    bugguy - infested terran

So as you can see, a lot of the unit names known to us right now will probably have a different name by the time the game is released. I will list out the units name and my opinions to each one that needs a change.

Stalkers - I hate this name. It sounds way too plain. Not ProtossLike. I suggest rename it to Dark Dragoons. Yes, it may sound plain too but those are what they are. There's Templars and Dark Templars. Why can't there be Dragoons and Dark Dragoons?

Reapers/Marauders - I'm not totally against these 2 names. But it just doesn't fit the theme for their roles. But if Blizzard decides to keep keep them, I wouldn't mind that much.

Roaches - Again, terrible name. Sounds way too plain. I don't have any ideas on how to rename the Roaches but fgs, rename it. It's terrible.

Swarm Guardian - Yes, it has a new mechanic. But Swarm Guardian sounds too bleh. I suggest a complete rename of this unit since it doesn't even look like a Guardian now.

That basically concludes my list. So what are the units that you guys think that needs a rename?

Are those really names that Blizzard considered to have in SC?

As for your list, the only thing common in dragoons and stalkers is the 4 legs, so I wouldn't call them dark dragoons.
They look, fire, and are controlled differently.
I can't come up with a suitable name though.

I agree with you on the roaches, very unimaginative name. I propose subversa because it's descriptive and not a bland word.

Dreadnought needs to be in the game....It is FAR too cool to not be.

Agreed, Roaches sound lame...I mean, yeah, they're impossible to kill, but still....

Stalkers need to have a more ethreal name...I mean, they teleport around...Kinda like you can sixth sense them , but turn around and they're gone.

On the other hand, I think Reaper works perfectly. They come outta nowhere, mow down some dudes, then disappear.

    Why Dark Dragoons?
Wouldn't something else like Shadow Dragoons sound better?

I agree with you about the roach, but not the others.

Dark dragoon would be unimaginative and I agree with kuvasz about the dragoons and stalkers shouldn't be similarly named because of them not being the same idea.

Reapers/marauders - if you look up the words in the dictionary, I think they make perfect sense and fit quite well.

I really couldn't care less about what they name the Zerg units though. As far as I am concerned, they are just different forms that explosions of blood take before I tear them apart with my psi blades or blow them to smithereens with my Arclite cannons or missile salvos

'Stalker' is awesome. Of course it's simple and plain. That's what makes it so sexy. It's just like the 'Carrier' or the 'Arbiter' or the 'Reaver' or the 'Observer' or the 'Scout', etc. Not to mention the 'Collosus' and the 'Nullifier' and the 'Warp Ray' and the 'Mothership'. Protoss have simple names. It's as simple as that. :p

'Reaper' and 'Marauder' are just awesome. Suit the units perfectly.

About the 'Roach', am I seriously the only person who likes this name? They're numerous, putrid and require an extreme and concentrated amount of force to exterminate.

I kinda agree with 'Swarm Guardian', but I also strongly disagree. You've got to admit, regardless of whether it spawns Broodlings or not, this is not just the plain old Guardian returning. It's bigger, more powerful and more durable. I reckon naming it the 'Swarm' Guardian is a great way to basically label it as a Greater Guardian, without spelling it out for those playing.

I think it just goes to show to never worry too much about about something in a game that's not done yet. Especially a Blizzard game.

  14. ^ I wish people would realize this. I think that the release date will be a lot later than a lot of people are thinking so there'll be a metric TON of changes.

Some people still even hold on to a Christmas 2008 release :D

Just to clarify, 'ton' obviously spelt T-O-N, is imperial, not metric. 'Tonne', on the other hand, obviously spelt T-O-N-N-E, is the metric spelling.

Personally, I'd preferably want it to be released at the end of 2009. Gives Blizzard plenty of time to iron out all the kinks, especially seeing as the first few patches released soon after the game almost always have a few major corrections, and also doesn't mess up year 12 or my HSC... :p

Is it just me or the list is a bit messed up?
It starts with current_name - beta_name pattern, but then there's:
    Templar - Dragoon
    Mutalid - Mutalisk
    Lurker - Sunken
    Hive - Queens nest
Evolution chamber - Spore colony (that looked weird)
    Armory - Chemical plant
    bugguy - infested terran
Some of these are reversed and some not, confusing.

I'm not a fan of Roach, but I wouldn't mind if it stayed that way. It does fit the unit.

I'm sure that would've just been a no-brainer placeholder name. Like how now we're always seeing placeholder models and portrait, etc, and seeing as you can't just reuse a name when making the original game like you can with portraits when making a sequel, it'd've just been the first thing that came to mind.

Perhaps kinda like your Firmlisk suggestion. :p
