I have 2 ideas for selecting units a. You hold down a key (like the control key) and this allows you to pick out units from a existing group and adds them to a different group or allows just control of all the units kind of the same way you can do it when you highlighting or click on something and then go to another spot and highlight just what you want. example: you have 12 stalkers and 2 high templar in your group and you see 4 that are wounded and the 2 templar are too close. So you hold down ctr click on each of the 4 and the 2 Templar out of the group and then right click on a area and only the 4 stalkers and 2 Templar are selected and moved. b. you can select multi units in the detailed screen the same way you can on the actual units themselves.
I really, really wish more people played Warcraft 3. This is one of the best improvements ever in a rts game. However, Blizzard already thought of this years ago. You can select individual unit types and stats -poisoned, damaged, whatev- from a group already in Warcraft 3. Since pretty much any handy feature from there will be in Starcraft 2: no worries!
One question : If you select a Tank, a ghost and a marine for instance. What will appear in the control panel ? Will there be "morph intto Siege mode", "cloak", "nuke", "stimpack" icons available even if you select different units with different options ? It would be great if it is possible.
i dunno if it's possible sogeking, but it would be cool if you could set it so that certain abilities could take precedence over others when you have a group of units selected that consists of a mix of units with multiple abilities ie you could set it so that when you have ghosts selected with siege tanks and nighthawks, you'd be able to select cloak and auto turret as the abilities that would be available when the units are in mixed groups
I understand? Imagine for instance you select so many different units with many different abilities, how could it be possible to display them on the control panel ? As you've meant, we should choose the abilities that have priorities.
Yes you'd have a screen where you rank all the abilities 1-32 or whatever, how ever many abilities they are. And in the mixed group all the abilities are in order according to the rank order you set earlier. And any extras that don't fit on the abilities screen in the main game just are not shown. or you have an next page tab so you can see the next lot. Example. You have a 3x3 square for example of abilities. So 9 squares. 1 is attack, 2 is stop, 3 is move, 4 is patrol. And 5-9 are just abilities. But if you have more than 5 abilities in the group then square 9 is a "to the next page tab". And on the 2nd page squares 1-4 are the same and 5 is previous page tab and 6-9 is abilities unless you have way to many then square 9 is move to next page tab. Well I hope that makes sense. But I think a 4 x 4 grid, that's 16 squares would be a gold idea for this. With the same format as above. Of course you can hot key certain abilities if you want to for easier access too.
More people need to play Warcraft III. The ghost is probably the highest "ranked" unit in that group, so you'll get its full control interface (eg basic abilities like attack, plus cloak, nuke and other ghost abilities). If you want to use the tank's abilities, you push tab, and now you get the tank's full interface. Want the marine? Press tab again. Blizzard said this way the UI isn't stuck at the "lowest common denominator".
Warcraft 3 controls are almost perfect. If I remember correctly, (haven't played in a week, and most actions are like, automated by your mind) you can also select units within a selected group with their hotkey. However, I have no idea how this influences the active abilities hotkeys. Uugh, I need some sleep.
I agree 100% here. The TAB key is your friend. TAB SHIFT and CTRL are all the keys you'll need to control your army easily and effectively. And you CAN do all that in WC3!!!
I was also thinking about that too but it may take away too much of the mico. Also maybe you could click on button and it would toggle through different unit abilities or something like that if you have different casters in your group.
Hmm, I think that actually using the abilities should fall into the micro category. Not being able to quickly select abilities in a group, that's just poor UI design. And as Simbob said: the tab key is your friend.
