Catan is one of the least addictive. The original age of wonders is also quite addictive. I've actually found myself trying to end a turn while making a test. Even Lords of Magic, despite being about 15 years old and having no mini-map is very addictive. Most recently I've played civ 4. Anyone know a cool fantasy-TBS with more of an economic focus?
Oh, sorry, I almost missed this thread. I'm busy keeping the Khmer from invading my continent in Civilization.
I find FFT easy to put down. Its so boring and repetitive... and the stories of most FFT games just don't push me to play. I suck quite a bit of time into FFT for the DS... just wasn't rewarding enough. The funny thing is the closest precursor to FFT, Bahamut Lagoon, is just so much more interesting. Not only is the combat more compelling, but the story keeps you playing. Now that I've thought about it, I should really go back and play that game again, this time to the end. I wish this game would get some kind of revival... it would be awesome and probably spaw its own franchise if it came out stateside. Its like a mix of Final Fantasy party based combat, with dragons assigned to each party! Noriko Matsueda's soundtrack was also pretty awesome.
Why can't I find a single fantasy TBS without RPG elements. Yes, I wanna focus on the economy, preferably with a large resource system.
None of those advanced war games seem to have any fun resource management, economic organization or fantasy elements.
Quite sure it isn't. >_> You capture towns and 3 kinds of bases to get an income, produce from all of them, units have different supply needs, etc. It goes pretty deep. Then there's the fact that you fight in the air, on land, and on water at the same time. Special powers from your commanders which allow you to do fast repairs, take 2 turns in one round, get more ranged attack power for a turn, etc. The story maybe is a bit meh if you jump in now, but if you've played all of the series, there's actually a quite neat plot. That, and the conversations between your commanders and the enemies are just plain hilarious.
What about the fantasy? You know, I just realized I am basically waiting for civalization with dragons and elves. Would be fun. Maybe add a little steampunk as tech, mithral and heartwood as resources. I can see it now.....
The fantasy consists of the weird alien ish commander guys who are your main enemy, and the huge attack **** some commanders have as specials. Like, one of them can call down meteors.
