I have a new idea; it's a continuation of aKa jR's Falcon idea. It's called the Eagle, it's an AtA elite fighter, but not a "super unit."

It is build from the Nomad. It costs 150 minerals, 275 gas, and 3 supplies. When you build it, it comes in a pack of 2 fairly weak fighters. But they count as one unit. They have twin rail guns. They are very fast moving AtA fighters. They get a large bonus against lightly armored flyers.

But, if you upgrade them from the Starport Control Tower (or the Starport attachment), when you deploy them from the Nomad, they fuse into one Eagle, getting 4 rail guns, better armor, a bigger light armor bonus, more damage, and they become slightly slower. But this upgrade costs 150 minerals and 100 gas. So, it becomes an Air-superiority fighter, but still isn't a "super unit."

    What do you think?

EDIT: Took out the psi-shield idea.

It's a nice idea, except the shield is a protoss ability only I believe. It would be more Terran-ish if the two combined ships got some kind of attack. Maybe a rapid burst that hits with an AoE, but renders the ship unable to fire for a while?

    But why the Nomad?

Nomad because it's different and it would put it to good use. And yes, Terrans have some psi power; on SC2 .com it says that ghosts use psi power to cloak. Plus, your AoE, then cooldown idea too much resembles the Phoenix.

Only the most powerful Ghosts (think Kerrigan) can use their psi to cloak themselves. The rest must use cloaking devices. This is why wraiths cloak as well. The protoss use both induced psi-field generators (for machines) and natural ability to make a shield.

The Terran have, as of yet, not been able to reproduce this technology.

I don't like the idea of two Eagles counting as one unit. Unless you mean for it to be like when Zerglings or Scourges were built and two can from the same Egg, but having two ships for one unit isn't a good idea. I prefer the idea of just building the end product, without having to upgrade them for it. Terran need a pretty standard Air-to-Air unit. I'm not saying that it can't have any abilities, but having it built from the Nomad, then needing an upgrade to combine two of them into the final specialized Air-to-Air unit seems a bit unnecessary.

It has promise, but I also don't really like the two ships as one part. I do like the fact that it is built from an existing unit as well as enjoy the weapons as rail guns.

I like the waepons, but how can the Nomad build such a strong unit (the normad is very little)??? And IMO it costs to much, Terran need a weak but massable unit against light, not a unit that costs 400 gas+min...

Just using the two as one with out upgrading, then massing them could be a strategy players use to do a swift, fast attack.

Plus, when the unit is destroyed, only one of the two ships blows up, so it takes twice the damage to take it down. And you're getting two ships for the price and supply of one. Then you can upgrade it when you're ready for a bigger attack.

But I could change it to make it so that two build at once but are two different units, maybe that would be a better idea. I'm just throwing things out there.

how about bringing back something like the valkarie, a larger unit that does massive splash damage against small clustered air units.

That's a possability, but I don't know, I think I'll come up with another idea.

well the terrans allready have an air superiority fighter, so you would need to have this new ATA ship have a different role. If its anti fighter then i think it should be medium sized, like a gunship capable of engaging several clustered enemies at the same time (splash damage).

It doesn't last twice as long rather than it loses half its firepower twice as quickly. One unit with the same damage but combined health of the two would be more effective than the two separate units, because it would be able to sustain its full firepower for twice as long.

I don't know, having a single unit that can break into two may be interesting, especially if the armor type and attack type changed as a result. Maybe up to three (or four) could combine? You know, to change it to small/medium/large in each regard.

yeah ok i like the two units that can combine to become one transformer style or whatever but they should be created individually, the created in pairs thing is just weird to me.

It works for Zerg, but that's because they're biological. Terran wouldn't wait until they have two of the same unit before they send them out, they'd send them out as soon as they're off the production line.

I like the combining-splitting idea. It fits well with what the Terran seem to be becoming. They could split to attack different points in an enemy base (requiring the enemy to split up their defense) or come together to mitigate the effects of splash attacks. I'd like to see them have different move rates or armor types, different abilities, etc when in different modes, too. This is definitely something that would add to the game.

I've seen this done before, in Homeworld: Catyclism. Several of the smaller, fighter-class units could later be researched to pair up into frigate-class units that could take more of a punch or use larger abilities.

An by the way, the single easiest way to come up with a plain, generic plane name: naming it after a bird of prey. E-everyone does it. Try to avoid being everyone >_<
