Aparently it gives a very large sight range. I imagine they will be put near choke points

Yup, it's got an ability called scanner sweep. Same exact thing.

Thats neat. I'll be terran in sc2 so my sensor towers will be sweeping the map anyway.

Cant wait to play around with those babies and with reapers, those two things look wicked fun to play around with.

Though, sadly, all the players can see it's location on the map.....Which is lame.

    That can always be changed.

Perhaps a poll is in order

Not that I know of.  That would be imbalanced probably allowing you to spy on the enemy to easily from a safe distance from their defenses

They said in an old Q&A or something that planetary fortresses and surveillance stations can't liftoff,
only CC:s can. They can't be downgraded back to CC:s either.

We are talking about the neutral/capturable structure

The CC upgrade is still called the Com Sat so far as I know

The surveillance station is the upgrade for the CC
The observatory is the neutral building ;)

You can still capture Observatories and scatter Sensor Towers, so yeah, balance reasons.

I think more often than not I'll be getting the survellence station, which I will now refer to as the SS, over the planetary fortress, PF, at least for my main base. I think it should be easy enough for me to have enough defense at my own base that I won't need the PF very often. I'd rather have scan sweep. I'd probably get PF's at expansions though if I don't just leave them as normal CC's. While having two comstats in SC1 was useful at times it wasn't really necessary. I lil extra defense at an expansion would probably be more useful.

Now that nukes aren't made from the CC (or their addons anyway), I think I'll stick with the fortress. The PF will be awesome against worker raids, which can more or less halt your economy for a long time. Of course, I'll need to have at least one SS for detection purposes, although I think the sensor tower will do that job sufficiently well. It's only when I'm attacking that I'll need the scanner sweep.
