Ever wonder what exactly those stim-packed marines are on? Or whether cloaking devices could really work? Or whether real-world creatures could survive in space like the Zerg?

Yeah, me too. That's why i created The Science of Starcraft. It's a blog where I take aspects of the Starcraft Universe and look for real-world science to back them up (or prove that they're impossible).

I actually am a scientist (I study Mars and shoot things with lasers! I'm not even joking. Ask me about it sometime.) so I try to make the site as accurate as possible.

if you have any ideas for things you'd like me to write about, send me an email at ryan [at] starcraftscience.com

Huh, you've got some pretty interesting articles here! Do you have a set list of StarCraft aspects you'll be tackling, or do you just write on them as they come to mind?

@Mods: Not sure whether the thread should remain in Space Junk or not, but this is totally worth being stickied. That, or linked from the news portal.

You should spread the word about this, honestly man its amazing.

Maybe talk to a commentator or something and they can feature you in there?

Phew, I'm glad people other than me think this stuff is interesting! ;)

Kaaraa: I'm just writing about stuff as I think of it. I'm also tackling some of the easier stuff first... you'll notice I haven't written much about Protoss technology yet. :)

Hold pu: Thanks for the ideas! I'm definitely going to be writing about force fields (both the terran and protoss varieties). The medic "healing ray" is a good topic too. I'm not a biologist, so posts about stuff like that take me a little longer to research, but it's nice to think about science that isn't my day job. :)

1n5an1ty: Heh, I totally do the same in fantasy settings. I just don't have a blog devoted to it.... yet.

MPower: Thanks! Forgive my newbishness, but what's a "commentator" and how do I talk to them? It it part of the forum?

Commentator's are the people who comment on SC games.

    You may have heard some of the popular ones for SC2 like;
    HDStarcraft
    HuskyStarcraft
    Day[9]

My good sir/madam, the epicness of this, has won you an internet. And a cookie.

What if the 'healthray' somehow activated the telomere, causing rapid cell regeneration?

They are mostly on Youtube, they watch replays and do a commentary on them. They get a ton of hits so a lot of people see their videos. I think if you contact them one of them should be interested in your work :)

Ah, right. The commentators are the ones who do commentary. Hi, I'm smart.

Do they typically feature other sites in their commentary? I want to get the word out about my site, but don't want to annoy them and come across as a spammer...

Very nice, for all us people who finds the scientific "background" for the starcraft universe or any science fiction interesting, but do not have the brain or time to find out by ourselves :)
This is probably in Space Junk because it advertises a site, but i do think it should deserve much more.
Could you make something about how Terran/Protoss power supply work? (EDIT Read the marine part, but more speculation would be nice)

Yeah, I posted here because I was pretty much spamming for my site. Didn't want to break any forum rules right out of the gate. ;)

I could do a post about power supplies (I'm a lot more qualified to talk about physics than biology), though, do they ever actually say what the power supply is for Terran and Protoss?

The wiki mentions nothing about power sources of the CMC Powered Combat Suit

Well, it looks like the good folks at GamePro had the same idea as me! They posted an article about The Science of Starcraft today. Totally "stole" my idea, but hey, if it generates more interest, then I'm all for it. :)

Haven't contacted any commentators yet, but am seriously considering it... it would be really cool to get a shout-out, though I'm not sure they would be willing to do it. Doesn't hurt to ask I guess...

It's not as good as yours, Nova, though I guess that's what we have to expect since they're not as dedicated to the subject as you are.

Im telling you, anyone who has played starcraft for 12 years has thought about Cloak, marine suits and all sorts of these things. Im pretty sure one of these guys will be happy to talk about it, or feature you . The worst they can do is say no?

Hell if all else fails make your own videos?
have sessions etc, Ill watch them, rate and subscribe to help ya out

Okay, I've emailed HuskyStarcraft and HDStarcraft. We'll see what they say...

Thanks for the encouragement! I don't know the strategy well enough to do my own commentary, especially for Starcraft 2, but I appreciate the support. :)

yes, my feathered brethren, we should all just stop worry and relax.

What about lift-off of terran buildings? there is no exhaust visible, and all that seems to change are the floor clamps going up
