"Diablo III’s director Jay Wilson recently told an audience at BlizzCon that Blizzard and Activision are looking to make some money with the Battle.Net service. How Blizzard will be seeking to “monetize” is unknown, but Wilson said it was necessary to keep the financially crippled Blizzard alive and kicking.

    From the panel discussion:"

Quote from blizz: "We are looking to monetize Battle.Net so that we get to keep making these games and updating features. We kind of have to. "

"Wilson didn’t elaborate, but I think we all know how much Blizzard has been suffering the past few years. After the colossal failure that was once a promising game, World of Warcraft, Blizzard has had to revaluate its existence and make some tough spending decisions. It’s a shame that World of Warcraft never took off, but we have the massive success (over 15 million subscribers) of Star Wars: Galaxies to thank for that."

I dont know about it "not taking off" but i do know since WoW "freezes" canceled accounts and never really closes them.. being the largest MMO is in-accurate.. to what extent only blizz knows

Sorry post in your board but 'necessary to keep the financially crippled Blizzard alive and kicking.'

Who the hell are they fooling? If Blizzard was so damn poor they wouldn't spend the time making sc2 a trilogy. Becuase it'd cost more money altogether, even if it gained them more (just as easy an expansion pack would do it) Blizzard is a big company, WoW sucks money fry from people, it's BS that they NEED to do it.

Quoted for emphasis. Even with employee paychecks and expenses for maintaining the servers, etc., Blizzard should have more than enough to stay on their feet. This decision Blizzard has made is the biggest, and I mean BIGGEST pile of bull**** I have ever heard.

Dude, I was really looking forward to d3 and sc2, now i'm pretty sure i'm not going to even bother with sc2, and i'm almsot considering not getting d3. this is going to turn into the most fanatical people stay in, just like WoW.

I'm in no way getting D3 if theres a fee for b.net, imma only get legacy of the void if at all for modding and the campaign.

Now that I think about it, we have heard news like this before. We can only hope that the core features of Battle.net (ability to make public games, type-chat, etc) will remain free while features like VoIP, reserved private channels or other non-essentials will have to be payed for. Still though, the entire issue makes me like this:

EDIT: Oh god overmind...I'll put up with a lot, but if Blizzard decides to put DRM on Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, I won't buy them. Hell, I may just go out of my way to convince others to do the same.

This is bull****, now you guys see what I am saying about greed being the single worst sin by far.

I'm still getting all three versions of sc2, but only cause I want all three parts of the story.

Think maybe it's Activision behind that push?

Also, the Blizzman himself never says they'll charge for it, just they want to make some moolah. Ads?

EDIT: Apparently Destructiod misquoted. The original is "We are looking to monetize certain features of Diablo III so that we get to keep making these games and updating features. We kind of have to. "

Meaning you can pay cold cash for that *****in' axe.

Wait until blizzard makes an official announcement explaining what the actual details of what they are planning are. Destructoid is a really bad source of information since they are misquoting what was said (As Fenix pointed out) and they are stating unsubstantiated assumptions as fact.... Hopefully its just in game items you can purchase etc which will cost money. But hey, I’m buying D3 and SC2 anyway.

DRM is something which I just ignore since it doesn't effect me much (if at all)...though I hope blizzard doesn't use it otherwise the internet will explode in a fury of whinging fanatical gamers. EA's overuse of it has also allowed it to improve in various ways (Allowing for reactivation of install limits). Hopefully by the time SC2 and D3 are released SecuROM will be less "offence" to these people.

Diablo is a lot better than Starcraft, imho. It didn't have as much depth, or strategy, but it had a certain charm about the dungeons crawling with hordes of monsters that want to rip out your spleen and beat you with it.

diablo and starcraft are very similair.

    Limited options as to race/character.

B/O were always pretty similiar, whether it be gearing your char or 12 hatching.

    Both grind fests..
SC you grind for APM and B/O memorization.
D2 you ran baal after baal after baal after baal.. till you either threw up or re-rolled

D3 i think had original plans to be pay-to-play MMO, but if Bnet becomes pay.. then its epic fail. Blizz should keep bnet free regardless.. and the joining of games based off subscription, if anything

O and dude, wc3 isnt an RTS IMO. Its hero based, not army. It was a good idea, but im glad to let it R.I.P.
