During the demonstration of the of the story mode in blizzcon, SC briefing room (i.e. the Hyperion) gave the player the opportunity to update his/her tech before the start of the game. For me, that created allot of questions I’m really interested in answering. Such as: when you start the mission, you start with units you have just purchased (same as the demo)? or you attain as u advance through the tech tree? when playing the mission, are you only allowed to create/play with the units you have purchased? or you u can reach to higher levels of the tech tree? what about the other two races? Will they have a similar system? Or will they provide a totally new single player exp? I know its abitt to early to ask these Q's but I’m interested to know what others might think about this especially those who are close to SC2 development team !
1) i think that it depends on the mission. in the mission shown, the vikings were there when you start the level, but if you dont buy vikings, you just wouldnt start with them. i dont think that you would start with a bunch of predators if you got them instead of vikings. 2) you cant get the unit/upgrade in-game unless you purchase it beforehand. 3) blizzard has said that the other races will be different, as it wouldnt make sense to buy units as the zerg or protoss. it will probably be similar though.
1) I think you would start with units you purchase before hand although you would still have to tech up to them as usual to get more of them. Remember in SC you would start with some units and usual a base of varying size. 2) I think that like in SC more of the tech tree will slowly be revealed (and bought in the case of SC2) throughout the campaign and in the last few missions you will play with the entire tech tree. 3) I think they said the other races will have different systems. It is unknown what similarities, if any, there will be.
The mission shown "required" the Viking tech, wich of course limits the actual Freedom this system offers. It forces you to buy certain techs to advance in the Story. Maybe it will be changed to "additional troops" during development who knows?
@Unent: It said recommended not required. I would guess that you can only build as high up the tech tree as you have purchased in the campaign. And maybe when you buy a new tech (ex vikings) you get a small group to play with on your next mission.
what struck me in the briefing room though was the star map... it was cool and i love it since i'm a lore buff... however, how do you think the star map for the protoss and zerg will look like..? maybe they don't have one but a cool equivalent as well..? more "distinction" between the races, even up to their respective briefing rooms, will add more flavor to the game if you ask me...
1) You probably start out with the units you purchased, the numbers depending on the unit and the mission. 2) I think there'll be a limit to the technology you can get in a mission, just like the first game, but not necessarily the ones you bought being the highest you can get. 3) I'd imagine that it'll be pretty unique, although similar to some extent. For Zerg, instead of purchasing upgrades/units, you'd go on various "bonus" missions to find a new DNA strain, or as the Protoss, well, no idea. Possibly convincing different characters to help you out and thereby unlocking new units/technology?
cool ideas 2 I think you will be limited by the tech tree you've purchased. In the SC1 I wondered why you couldn't finish up your tech tree (lore-wise). 3. Protoss convincing people to join is an awesome idea. Fits in with the whole idea of 2 factions strained by a forced union. Recruiting allies which translate into units would be great.
3. I think that the Zerg will get DNA instead of money and Protoss will get energy crystals to teleport their units
Hormones are the chemicals released in your body that causes the body to change. They don't really get you new species.
They could also remove the "more units as campaign progresses" idea for Zerg or Protoss. It may be tried and true but what was the last RTS where the Campaign gave you all units from the beginning?
I agree with others about the Protoss and Zerg "money". And as you are playing as Raynor in the Terran campaign, maybe you should play as Kerrigan in the Zerg campaign and Zeratul or Artanis in the Protoss campaign.
