For some reason, I got thinking about what I would do if I could combine games into one. And I thought of one. The best RTS ever. A game played on the scale of Sins of A Solar Empire with huge warships and hundreds of planets, but also with battles going on down ON the planets Supreme Commander landscape style. With Starcraft tactics and strategy. Holy flip. This game would be basically impossible to play effectively as the mere mortals we are, but it'd be fun still the same. Ugh. Imagine having to micromanage three or four different epic scale battles on like fifty different planets.
no, think of it like this: risk-style play, but where you command planets: you must manage economy, etc. then, whenever 2 armies make contact (you and an opponent) you can choose to play it RTS style against the enemy. lastly, whenever 2 armies make contact (an opponent and an opponent) you can choose to play it FPS style against the enemy. also, similar to in WC3, the rpg element will be added by you having a few custom heroes: one "president, emperor, dictator" guy and one "general, admiral, soldier" guy. your first guy will be you in the Risk style play, the second guy will be your hero in the RTS style play. in the FPS, your upgrades/etc. will have a save file for each "opponent" you play as.
Well, this thread appealed to some bit of me and I thought I would give you guys a small little bit of work that could actually in theory make this possible. What my post is mainly based upon is that the Universe the RTS will inhabit will be constantly working on its own whether or not the player is active. How so you ask? Well, a few measures can be taken to make this possible. 1. Make an NPC with an active role in Universal Affairs. This NPC will monitor colonies where the player would begin. As the colony gets larger so does the options the player has and thus less will the NPC interfer. 2. Allow garrison and space blockade deployments by both players and NPCs. For example, you are preparing to log out of the game. One of your planets is under constant attack by your enemy and he has no intent of quitting while your off living the real life. Therefore, you could say hire NPC garrisons to defend the planet in RTS skirmishes while you are gone. 3. Allow the garrison and or space blockade to work as though it is a computer player, while, simoultaneous allowing a human player to attack other spots. (Basicly become a battle commander and follow campaigns in one part of the galaxy, while, your enemy player attacks another spot, thus, reducing forced battleing between players.) I could go on, but those are just a few examples of ways to actually make this possible, however, it would require an extremely smart AI to work within the bounds of the game and if you extended this to an MMO setting... well... then this is only the tip of a very large iceberg and its not gonna get any warmer. Anyways...
im looking at schools in arizona, but i still have 3 years of high school left. all i can do is concepts and im going to learn programming/level design, but somebody else will have to do most of the programming, and we will need someone for graphics. if we could just get 1 person for modifying voices, we could have 1 of us do all the voice-acting, then have that 1 hired person change them all to fit each character. otherwise, we would have to hire a bunch of voice actors.
umm, i dont think that would work, imagine having to pay to log out and come back and you've lost anyway...
I've always wanted to play a pacman RTS. Build your army of dot eating yellowmen to collect dots, upgrade the powers the big dots give you, fight against the army of ghosts with your upgraded pacmen, trample through the maze walls or just bulldoze them down with your round body at a certain upgrade level, eat weaker pacmen in exciting multiplayer in order to gain their dots. Makes me salivate.
