Play Strife (beta) today! @ http://vgstrife.com

I've only posted about the beta on a few select sites at first to get things started.

I started this project, a StarCraft-themed game, from scratch about a month ago and I'm personally impressed with myself on how much I've completed thus far. I have made so much progress that it now warrants the need for a public beta test of the game. The purpose of this beta stage is to help find any bugs and add any last minute fundamental features, but more importantly to hear your opinions on the units and to address any balancing that is necessary.

All concept & design work, web design, and programming are done by me alone. The unit artwork is provided by my older brother.

    --- What is Strife? ---

For those that do not know what Strife is yet, it is a free to play browser-based game where players match a team of units against another player's team. The idea behind the game was inspired behind the famous MyBrute.com, but takes a different approach. Players can swap in and out units of a team, upgrade an individual units' equipment, and even manage multiple teams. These teams can be composed of units from any race in the SC franchise. For example, you could pit a team of zerglings against a 2 unit team of a marine and a zealot. The best part is the game only requires 5-10 minutes a day to play at the very least, though the more dedicated players will spend maybe double or triple that.

    --- More.. ---

At this stage of the game I am very open to any ideas to make it more interesting and intuitive. While the game does have elements of randomization and luck to it does maintain a mixture of player controlled aspects so as to keep things fresh. Remember, this is the beta stage and has, for the most part, all of the functions working. The final version of the game will have fully animated battles that will unfold before your eyes, just like MyBrute.com, complete with illustrated unit artwork.

Here is what else to expect to be added in the coming weeks during the beta..
    - Multiple daily tournaments.
    - Auction house (both teams/units).
    - More units, and their accompanying classes.
    - Damage types (normal/concussive/explosive).
    - Splash damage.

And what is being withheld until the final version..
    - Fully animated battles that can be watched.
    - Seasons (3 months long) to keep the standings fresh.

So what are you waiting for? Try it out today! Participate and help me balance the units (stats/costs/etc.) while you're at it. Head on over to to the link below:

If you have any further questions about specific and direct game elements, then please refer to the official help page first and then the forums if necessary.

    --- Beta patch 2 (12/1/09) ---

    New/changes..
    - New "auto" link on a team's battlefield page that allows players to let the system automatically complete any remaining available battles. The downside to this is that players cannot choose who they fight each time, and instead it is random.
    - Battles are now pruned, for database intensive purposes. Battles over a week old, that are not favorited (upcoming feature) will be pruned on level 1. Battles over a month old, that are still not favorited, will be pruned on level 2.
    - Releasing a team is now permanent. Meaning you cannot reclaim a team or transfer it to another player.
    - Viewing unclaimed teams now only shows teams created in the last week.
    - Hovering over the number of remaining fights, on the battlefield page, now shows how many hours until you can fight again.
    - Tweaked the battlefield to allow for a broader range of teams to fight. The range increases as a team's level increases.
    - Tweaked experience/credit values for performing certain actions. Mainly teams will now gain more, or less, xp/cr for defeating a team of a higher, or lower, level. Refer to this topic:
    http://vilegaming.com/forums.x/topics/20651
    - If a unit deals a critical strike to another unit, the opposing unit's armor value is cut in half for that attack's calculations.

    Bugs..
    - Fixed a bug where teams that leveled up during an automatic battle would gain extra levels.
    - Fixed a bug which caused incorrect dates to show up on the battles and actions pages.
    - Removed a restriction/bug where players could not add low-level units to a higher level team.

    Notes/reminders..
    - When a unit levels up their costs for upgrading critical strikes is cut in half.
    - Ending a team's winning streak, that is at least 10 wins, will earn you extra credits which is equivalent to the streak you ended divided by 5 (and of course rounded).
    - Teams do not gain experience/credits for recruiting a new team (with their recruiting link) once they are level 10 or higher.
    - Teams only gain experience one of their recruits levels up and is within 10 levels of their own.
    - Released teams, teams sold through the market, or teams owned by non-registered players get random upgrades (armor/attacks/critical) after each battle.

    --- Beta patch 1 (11/22/09) ---

    New/changes..
    - Added a limit to how many teams a person (guest or member) can create per day. The limit is 5.
    - Added a limit to how many times a team can initiate a fight against another team repeatedly in a day. The limit is 3.
    - Added a limit to how many times a player can initiate fight against another team repeatedly in a day, using different teams. The limit is 15.
    - Balance tweak: Reduced the ranges for HP gains during each unit's level up.
    - Balance tweak: Made zerglings more valuable and both zealots/dragoons less valuable.
    - Upon hovering over a recovery rate percent a tip will show up revealing how many hours it takes for your team to fully recovery.
    - Creating a clan now costs 100 credits.
    - Level cap is now set to 99, for both teams and units.
    - Hovering over a unit on the unit standings will show which team it is a part of.
    - Added icons to actions lists for visual clarity and association.
    - Increased battlefield ranges when searching for a new opponent.
    - Minimum level required for a team/unit to be sold is increased to 10.
    - Experience required for each new level has been increased slightly.

    Bugs..
    - Fixed a problem where Internet Explorer users were receiving an error upon registration.
    - Fixed a bug where selling a unit returned no credits.
    - Fixed a bug which allowed players to pit their own teams against each other.
    - Fixed a paging bug on the battles page when viewing a specific team.

    Notes/reminders..
    - Selling a team/unit now returns 90% of their experience in credits. Premium members get 100%.
    - Teams do not gain experience for defeating another team that is more than 10 levels away.
