Couldn't find this explained in any other thread, so here I go.

I bought the game yesterday, installed it, and tried starting it up. BUT, when I click the shortcut to start the game, the screen goes black as if it's about to work. But then it exits out, goes back to my desktop, and says "Starcraft II Requires a Patch. Would you like to install it now?"
I clicked 'Okay,' and the process begins anew. (black screen, exits out, asks me if I wanna install the patch)

SO...anyone know how to fix this? Is there somewhere else I can go to install the patch?

Thanks a ton in advance ^^

This is probably a connection issue. First steps to think about:

    - Is PeerBlock/PeerGuardian running? If yes, disable/add Blizzard IP exemption.
    - 2nd, are you behind a router? If yes, make and model. You may need to forward ports
    - 3rd, did you just move into collage and are on a campus area network?

We'll start with that. These issues are supposed to be covered in my FAQ, but I am working on a troubleshooting guide. I want to try some yes and no to see if this newer method is easier to understand.

Also, I want you to post your launcher.log (C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II\Logs). Take all of the logs found in that folder and zip them, along with a dxdiag and lets see what we can do.

To run dxdiag=> Windows_logo_key+r, dxdiag. If you have 64-bit windows, click the button at the button that says "Run 64-bit DxDiag," Then save all the data by clicking "Save All Information..." zip/rar this text file with the /logs folder and attach it to a post. Instructions on how to zip here. To create a rar file, first download and install winRAR then read this guide here.

I'm not exactly sure how to check 1 and 2...I forgot how to access my firewall ever since my laptop blue-screened. But no, I've been living in the same house for about 2 years now.

I compressed the Logs files into a file, but I don't know what how to do that last part you talked about, sorry >>

How do I send a copy of the Logs?

To attach the files to a post, click "Go Advanced" in the quick replay, then at the bottom of that posting screen, you can click "manage attachments." You can even edit your previous post and follow the same instructions to attach the file.

If you don't know what PeerBlock is, you prob aren't using it. What are you using for anti-virus protection?

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free, full featured virus scanner that is lightweight. Did I mention its free? Install it, update it, run it (at least a Quick scan)... in the mean time I'll checkout what you posted.

*Edit* Please run the dxdiag too. Never know when I'll need your system information.

How do you connect to the internet? Do you share this internet with other people or is it plugged directly into your PC? What kind of internet is it (Who is your internet service provider), cable or DSL?

I have a wireless router, I don't share with anyone, unless you mean with multiple computers (but in the same house). I'm not quite sure whether it's cable or DSL, all I know is that it's called 'Linksys.'

I saved the Dxdiag thingy as a text document, but it says it exceeds the forum's limits.

you need to zip the dxdiag too.. need to zip pretty much everything because of the small file limit. Check the router label on the model and find out what model it is. Once I know it, I can find instructions on port forwarding.

    Ah, sorry about that >>

    Router: Model Number(necessary?): WRT160N

    Serial: WRT160N

Then there's another router, but I don't think it does anything...

    MODEM ADSL 660 Series.

Yeah, I mean between computers. Read this guide on forwarding StarCraft II's ports on your router. This is the first for the game, this is the 2nd for the patcher[/jurl]. Follow the steps to setup port forwarding on your router, or make sure uPnP is enabled. If it is already enabled, just move forward with port forwarding.

In the mean time, I am going to chase down new drivers for you, because video wise, you are in trouble without newer drivers. I would recommend when things are finally sorted, that you play plugged into the network using an ethernet cable.

*edit* I figured out the machine is a Dell... but I can't figure out the exactly model number? Can you tell me, it will help me track down more updates for it.

Newest video drivers. This may not install since you have a mobility. Ignore the WHQL signature warning and install the driver anyway if prompted. Follow this guide to install the drivers correctly (do not use those driver links, use the one I provide here!).

Newest NIC card driver. Can't tell if its newer then the one installed because the DXDiag isn't pulling a version on that driver. o_O

Only drivers I can find for now, without additional information...

You only have a 51GB hard drive? That can't be right~~~ (Wait, yes it is. A 10k hard drive. @_@). You are going to need to free up some SERIOUS free space so you can have at least a 6GB page file (meaning, at least want 7-8GB's of free space). I would then defrag with PerfectDisk Pro, first in boot defrag until the meta data/page file is defraged, then online defrag.

    Model Number: PP20L

And I can't find the serial number >< I looked all over the bottom of the laptop, but I couldn't find it...if it helps, above the keyboard, it says E1505

EDIT: Just read you post, yeeeah...it's about a 3 year old laptop, so it's not the best thing out there. I bet I could free up a lot of space, I do a whole bunch of downloading, so I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I can get rid of. (games, anime, etc)

The model is all I needed to know. E1505.

Run the Intel Driver Update Utility to update your chipset drivers.. it will probably find a new wireless nic card too.

    Slightly newer sound driver.

    Slightly newer memory stick driver.

    Automically newer BIOS.

Let me know if you had any issues installing anything, especially the video driver. If your not sure if the video driver installed, post an updated dxdiag after all this stuff is installed.

Alright, I just deleted my old video drivers, and I'm about to download the one you talked about in that link. But, before I do, I'm downloading the one that's called 'Catalyst Software Suite,' right?

And after I do that and update my chipset server, do you think it'll work?
Thanks sooo much for all the help so far ^^

No, please download the "Catalyst Legacy" Display Driver, the one I listed in my post above. Ignore the links in that guide, those are for newer cards, and just follow the installation instructions.

    I don't know what you mean by delete your drivers, I hope you mean uninstall. ^^;

yeah, as long as you "uninstalled" them and didn't "delete" them.

Deleting them means something quiet different to me XD

My bad, you are going to get the one labeled "Catalyst Software Suite," that way you get the CCC installed with it. XD I guess the page didn't reload right on my machine... I hate dialup.

Is this the dxdiag after uninstall, or after installing your newest drivers? The legacy driver may have trouble being installed because you have a laptop. :/ We have other options for drivers that are newer... but the likely hood of playing SC2 is much lower.

If you just wanted to make sure the driver was uninstalled right, you did good. Go ahead and install the Legacy driver.

I may have ran dxdiag wrong, under 'Display' it says:

    DirectDraw Acceleration: Not Available
    Direct 3D Acceleration: Not Available
    AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available

Is that not supposed to be...like that? I'll try running it one more time.

But yeah, I had already downloaded both of those video drivers in the link you sent me so...
