The online petition combating the removal of LAN, an integral part of play from the original StarCraft, has hit one hundred thousand signatures. Now, obviously, this doesn't mean Blizzard will reconsider their position as, at heart, they are in business to make money. Blizzard has defended it's move to remove LAN play in a few ways, most notably due to anti-piracy measures, but also to 'ensure a quality multiplayer experience in StarCraft II.' As far as I can tell, Blizzard hasn't released a statement concerning this, and I'm fairly sure they won't, but one would think that at some point, they'd hear the voices of their fans, or, possibly more importantly, their customers. Actually, no, it's not most notably due to piracy. In fact, it's barely due to piracy at all. They've specifically stated that piracy isn't a big deal, and that they're combating it with their new installation process which requires you to login or create a Battle.Net account, and that the main way they're wanting to stop piracy is to create such a great Battle.Net experience people won't want to pirate it. The way I see it, they're lazy and can't be bothered putting the effort into making LAN, because they're forgetting that those who would otherwise be playing LAN would simply be playing private games on Battle.Net anyway.
Well that comes as a surprise. In the recent media release they basically said the opposite. Here and here. Particularly this;
Just signed now. Then right after i signed, in that .5 of a second, an additional 15 signatures were added.
I believe SC2 will have LAN, only that you have to log in to Bnet2.0 first. What's wrong with that? Most LAN's have internet.
i think if blizzard decides to have sc2 with no lan because of piracy then i can understand it. Then im all up for it. Blizzard will make the new standards of tomorrow gaming Go blizzard you rox !! roxxoxoxoxox - No lan all the way
Why would absence of LAN stop piracy? Even WoW is being pirated and hackers will find the way to remove any obstacle. In many counties piracy is legal and there are even shops that sell pirated games for very small praises.
No LAN spells doom for people who have crappy net connections such as the great dial up. There is always the bizarre chance that even a shop could lose their internet connection for an instant, and that could majorly disrupt gamers worldwide. I also feel too lazy to go signing up in the net before being able to play, despite my enemy is just centimeters away from me... bummer.
If this was the case then LAN or no LAN would not be an issue for you, as you'd have been too lazy to have gone to the store to purchase the game or navigate to Blizzard.com to purchase the digital version.
