Blizzard has announced plans for the StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty Collector's Edition set. The set will retail at $99 USD and includes a copy of the original SCBW, a behind-the-scenes DVD with commentary, and an exlusive World of WarCraft pet (I mean come on, right?)

    The full list includes:

    • The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
    • An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
    • A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director's commentary, and more
    • The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks
    • StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series
    • A World of Warcraft mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account
    • Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit

The Collector's Edition will cost $99 and only be available in retail stores - Blizzard also revealed that the standard edition of its PC and Mac RTS sequel will cost $59.99 and that its digital release will follow "shortly after [the retail] release."

The CEO of Blizzard, Mike Morhaime, had this to say, "We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe with our players for over 10 years, and we wanted to offer an epic collector's edition that commemorated the occasion. This special version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty--easily our biggest collector's edition to date--does just that, and we think StarCraft II gamers will really enjoy all of the exclusive contents.

A WOW pet? Vanilla SC on a UBS stick? C'mon, Blizzard, you can do better than that!

I don't even play WOW. And I already own 2 copies of SC Vanilla.

Aside from that, it's pretty much your standard fare of the-making-of-DVD and the-art-of coupled with the ubiquitous music-of.

The exclusive decals sound intriguing, though. But I'm passing on this one: I'm not willing to pay that much for decals.

ADDENDUM: On the other hand, I could always sit on this for a year or two, and sell it at 4x the price I paid initially.

While this is very cool I think I'm gonna have to stick with the standard edition. I don't really care about the art book, I already have the original Starcraft + Brood War, and I don't play Warcraft 3. The downloadable content, behind-the-scenes DVD, and soundtrack seem sweet, but as a poor med student it is not worth the extra $40.

Not to mention that the behind-the-scenes-DVD will be on YouTube within hours after the game is launched. And seriously: how long can you stare at artwork for?

Don't really care about the extras because I'm buying it anyways but the "release date in the next few weeks" is quite interesting :D

Exclusive ingame decals? does this mean you can customize your army similar to dawn of war 2? or does everybody besides me know that this is already possible or something

Perhaps it's just because I'm an arts major, but I could look at the artwork for hours on end (not to mention the comic book; let's hope the art is good).

Also, I've had such bad luck with losing my StarCraft CD's and failed attempts to load SC:BW onto my USB that it'd be nice to have the preloaded one that I could put on my keyring, as I have somehow never lost my keys before.

Not even to mention that such comic books might go for a lot more then $100 after a couple years. Do you know what first editions of some comics are worth? It's so freaking scary that it's above the pg13 rating this forum is going for. >_>

I'm getting the comic and will stare at the art until i can sell it later on. :p
