Starcraft 2 Music Themes

After seeing many videos on Beta gameplay already, I figured some would want to hear the music that plays in the Beta version for each race and menu. Since I found a channel that has all the music uploaded, below are vids of each theme in the game:

Hrmm, i recognize some of the sounds from the protoss one from somewhere.


zerg is mah favorite

 

For me:

1. The main title sounds way too Terran in my opinion. It should be much more space neutral like the SC1/BW theems were.

2. Protoss: What's the go with the beats etc in the theme here? I think take them out and just have a nice harmony and a much improved musical sound. But I must say the other layers in the track here I quite like. They sould a little WoW:BC to me though. But that could also fit for the Protoss ok. This one is a nice evolution of the old SC1 Protoss music. Mind you it makes the Protoss sound much more warlike then in SC1 where the Protoss music there made them sound enigmatic, religious, calm and stuck in their ways.

3. Terran. Something like this is what I had thought the Terran music should be. So take out the electric guitar like synth sound and you can really hear the SC1 music tracks this piece is based on. I quite like this new Terran music as it fits them well. My only concern is it might be a little powerful and might distract a player ingame. It's me hard to have the music on a decent level and still hear the games sounds. I think this music would jsut take over. The music is really not balanced enough in my opinion. The SC1 parts are fine. But the Electric guitar like synth parts need to be toned down totally. So in my books it's almost there but still not perfect. More of a techno/electro feel and less of a rock feel would have been nice too.

4. Zerg. So far the zerg music to me was very unbalanced. The foreground part overtakes the background parts way to much. And it's like in those moments when the forefround distorted synth like sound pops in, you could remoce the bacground noise and almost not even notice it was gone. Poor music design in my opinion. And also to me Blizzard got the evil in the zerg just right. The Zerg are an evil ugly bunch of aliens. But they didn't get the menacing part right. Liek in SC1 the zerg music had that "thriller movie" kind of feel to it. Not an in your face I'm evil rock attitude more like a skeak up on their pray like a hunter hiding in the bushes waiting to pounce. And when they do pounce and kill their victim you certainly notice it. I will say this music for the Zerg in SC2 is very zerg. But it paints a totally different feel for the Zerg.

If I was to pick a favourite I'd have to say would be the Terrans music of what is listed in this topic. Because it is the most balanced and sound rather Terran. (but still not 100% perfect, it has the too overpowering foreground as I mentioned above)

This is my opinion.

I'm not really liking the Terran theme. In the middle of the song it sounds too easy going, they should stick with the majestic sorta feel.

I dont mind zerg and protoss.

 

That's the point, it's the Wings of Liberty theme. It's a take on the classic Terran guitar...SOme of the chords are the same.

I'd image the Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void themes will sound similar to the classic Zerg and 'toss themes.

 

Wooo finally! Its been a pain trying to listen to the music under all the battle effects.

Like all of them cept the Protoss. Feel it diverges from the original style in sc1 too much. I mean the original was much more solemn, sad and patriotic feeling? This one takes music from the sc2 opening theme (the vocals) we heard countless times and adds too much of a fast paced style to it. The one with the flutes and synth however fits well with the protoss. Its not bad to listen to overall, feel it doesn't capture the style of the protoss so much. Protoss are now a broken race, deprived of their homeland thus their honor and dignity and I wish the music reflected more of that.

Zerg music i feel to be quite zerglike, minimalistic and slowly building up like the race itself. Always liked how zerg music was like that in the original and now. However one failing is that I feel they didn't really take risks with the music sticking with the same ideas, not sure if its just me but I can sense similar music cues and ideas from the previous games. But some parts are different enough to be acceptable i suppose. I'm just being too pedantic here XD

Finally Terran I feel to have the best music so far, but then it is their game lol. It has similar images of laid back humans who are now kicking some *** which also sc1 had. But it seems to have too much things going at the same time sometimes but not too much to be overwhelming to the listener. Also its pleasant to listen to which is a plus. The second part of the theme with the piano is simply awesome along with the rest. It sounds so badass and terran.

That's my review of the music. Hope that made sense and not too long lol.

 

That's true, maybe they are focusing too much on Terrans for the first part. I hope the third, the Protoss, part will be good enough.

 

No it's not too long at all. And many of the points you brought up with the music are the same points I brought up also. Just said is slightly different words. I'm glad someone agrees with me on how the music is.

 

I'm absolutely in love with the Terran track with the fiddles It sort of gives them that primitive redneck heritage. As if they've been in space for countless years and one would be compelled to say it's a great feat but they actually find it boring and the modern tech has become every-day tools for them and so they prefer earthly things and listen to old music... or something

Its unlikely for the BG music to change now right? Shame, while it is good to listen to it now, it could be much much better really... But I'm quite optimistic on the whole, its the first game of a trilogy thus they have plenty of time to rectify their music. Unless they become lazy and stick with the same music throughout. Then I will be very angry lol.

Also I agree with kuvasz that Terran music sounds redneckish. It always did since sc1 and glad that it stayed true to the spirit in the transition to sc2.

 

Maybe they won't be lazy but choose to stick with it because they like it? Like lots of us?

 

Hahhahah well sc1 one had good music and they added new ones in the broodwar expansion. I just want more music, is that so bad?

This is how the protoss music should be. Sad emotions evoked through sparing use of vocals, mostly synth and orchestral instruments. Hmm classical sc music has really aged well IMO

Will post my feelings up on this later, but I'm very impressed with these one, especially with the zerg ones. Its more zergish than the previous vid.

 

Blizzard only does what they want to do. It is just a random co-incidence that what they do is imensely popular.

While I do have small issues with the music, overall I find it really good to listen to. One problem I do have is that the music hasn't helped me decide which race I want to learn first. I was kinda hoping one or two would stand out to me to help me decide, but I like the themes for all three. Althongh, it probably won't be zerg since I dont have the micro skills to control the large numbers zerg seems to need to win. I want to try toss just cuz the colossus looks so bada** when it has support to protect it.

I think sc1 music is superior to sc2 music but it may be nostalgia bias... I kinda wish the music was... more ambient? I think the music right now is too in your face thing. But overall the protoss music is the most disappointing but since its only one track, I'll hope the others in the process of creation will be a bit better...

 

I thought it did as well but I've had to extract the music from the MPQ files for my walkman enough time over the years to know there's no music in the Brood War MPQs

Also, yeah, I prefer the SC1 music. Partially because of nostalgic bias but also because I feel it fits the races better. Some parts of the Protoss theme sound a bit Zerg to me and the Terran themes are bit too non-space to me

As for the main theme, I'd say they're going to remix the main theme for each product that's released. This main theme sounds Terran because it's from the Terran product.

Yeah I agree with you, one thing i liked abt sc1 music was how distinctive it was for each race, based on their characteristics. Who composed the themes then btw, I can't remember...
