The closed beta test will begin.

Meaning people who already have keys, not the opt-ins.

    Still. I'm freakin psyched.

Thank you Tychus you have really made my days maybe even years waiting for this game that much more worth it. I wouldn't have come upon this info by myself and i plan on becoming a concept artist for blizzard and hope to work on the starcraft series. Anyway the fact is THE BETA IS FREKIN HERE!!! i can't actually type myself jumping but i assure you my i was previous to writing this ecstatically jumpin up and down. My head hurts. I'm 6"1.

Now as someone said is this only a closed beta with those that got the key from Blizcon 08 or is it for everyone?

    I guess time will tell.

God you guys are so much quicker then me.

Anyways this is awesome news at least it gives us a time line now.

My guess now is it will be out around Christmas if we are lucky.

  9. They didn't specify what they meant by closed beta. So, I'd have to say I disagree with you that it's only those with BlizzCon keys. If you go by the standard "dictionary" definition then opt-ins count as well. Open beta pretty much means anyone can play it but there is a user limit. A closed beta means only a select few people are chosen; usually because of their computer specs or knowledge of the genre.

    (Dictionary definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle)

In fact they have been having closed betas for a little while if im not mistaken (limited play from people who play professionally I think) .

It will be a open beta though with a wide but limited playing field.

My question is when other regions get opened up will players be able to player with others from the newly opened region? (im sure this is a yes)

  11. An open beta would mean that anyone who wants in can get in as long as there's slots open. That's not what's happening here.

You're confusing internal alpha with closed beta because Blizzard has specifically said that they are not in beta. As in, they do not consider what they're doing as part of a beta. You can use whatever terminology you want but still ...

TychusFindlay is correct as I have participated in many closed and open betas for different companies.

Open Betas are for anyone and usually the sign ups for them start the same time as the open beta starts. Closed betas however are only for a select few for closed testing and generally sign ups and selections begin way before the actual closed beta is released and you usually have to submit your specs and agree to a non-disclosure agreement. This is not the case with an Open beta, there is no NDA and you don't usually have to submit your specs you just join and start playing.

I'm pretty sure the opt-ins as they call it right now on battle.net are for the closed beta as well for people who already have keys.

    Great stuff, but:

Another centralized gaming thingy? Not again! Now we have Games For Windows Live, XFire, and this new thing that will probably have Starcraft 2 listed in it. I hope there will be an option to just turn it of, or not use it. Now things are only becoming more complicated. Not to mention that only a small portion of the community actually plays all Blizzard games. Now they are acting as if they have dozens of games, like a stamp collection or something.

    *sigh* How thoughtfull of Blizzard.

Someone didn't notice that World of Warcraft happened...

Blizzard is the biggest PC gaming company in the world, Blizzard fans aren't the minority...

Never heard of EA, I assume? Blizzard might deliver good quality, but there are way bigger companies when it comes to profit and quantity of games.

And Seradin, it means that their goal is this summer. If they want to, it still gets delayed. No matter what has been said.

    Awesome, finally some descent information.
    I'm thinking game out Q4 or Q1 2010.

Till then I'll watch beta vids. Or if I'm lucky, play it myself.
