Hey guys, I just installed the retail version of Starcraft 2 and I can't seem to get it to run. First it said that I did not have an internet connection to authenticate my copy with, even though I did. I then got it to install, but when I try to play it goes to a black screen then says "Starcraft 2 requires a patch. Would you like to download and install the patch now." When I click "yes" it returns to the black screen then the same message appears.

I have Windows 7 32 bit if that matters.

Please help I can't find out what is wrong but I can't get the game to start.

    Thank you for your help.

Your firewall is prolly blocking it.

What time zone are you in?

I am having the exact same problem, this has practically been a nightmare, our firewalls turned off... been sitting here trying to just play the damn game for the past 2 hours but can't even do that.....

We are in the eastern time zone, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem where the game keeps requesting a patch download.......

My zone is Eastern Standard time.

I hope it isn't my firewall, I have had lots of trouble with my firewall and blizzard stuff.

    Check your firewall.

Dude, we have been fiddling with the firewall forever... it says it's turned off, we went through all the port forwarding ****, for the fire wall and for the router, etc etc....

My firewall is set to allow the game, and I have opened all of the ports that the blizzard down loader requires.

Just signed up to let you know that I am also having this problem. My ports are all open, I have no firewall or antivirus running.

    Solution greatly appreciated.

This installation could literally not be any worse. It took me an hour just to get the installer to connect, and even then I had to call customer service and talk to them for 30 minutes. Eventually the guy told me to put in some code as my authentication key and it just started installing fine.

Finally think I'm out of the woods and then this happens. I remember when I used to just be able to put a disc in the drive, click install, and it was that easy. Now, just to play my new game, I have to call customer service and search google for solutions. And STILL I can't play the game.

    Ok.

Make sure you have admin access to the user account or have UAC turned off.

Apparently you can get a black screen (doesn't say where or when) if you have a QuickCam webcam.

Thank you for your help Fenix.

I have full admin rights, and don't own a web cam so that doesn't help that much though.

Then I got nothing for ya mate.

My guess would be Blizzard's servers are like OH **** TOO MUCH STUFF AAAAAAAA right now, since there's over 9000 people trying to install and patch and play, and since the US is kinda late to the game, the servers are in a FDS mode at the moment.

Take a nap, and call in sick to work tomorrow.

I'm not from Australia but from the US and am having a similar problem. Just to recap: I click on the SC2 icon, it loads a black screen and prompts me with the message "StarCraft II requires a patch. Would you like to download and install the patch now?" I click yes and it closes... that's it. =(
    Please help

    I'm a mac user.

I tried reinstalling, loading the Blizzard Downloader (which said "There is nothing to download") and I emailed Blizzard support. And the map editor doesn't do anything. All a big mystery to me

I have exactly the same issue.... Been trying the last 3 hours to fix it unsuccessfully...

Reinstall, forward every port i can think of, no UAC, admin rights, USB wireless, Ethernet cable network, NO firewall, No anti virus.

Trying to manually use Blizz Updater same thing cannot detect an files to grab. Wierd one when so many people can play, yet fair few of us popping up with this issue.

I am using a 9800 GT so I do not believe it is the graphics card.

I doubt it is graphic card related. I am running 8800gt SLI
