Im no good at starcraft. Hopeless. But i enjoy it, and its actually one of the only ways i can connect with some of my more distant friends. I dont play many computer games n'that sorta stuff, i play guitar, i do this n'that, anyway.....

If you were to play soccer, or footy, tennis, chess, any sport or game which has a broad community, usually the majority, especially the better players are supportive and encouraging towards others. This kind of behaviour is promoted, as it should be.

The retired footy players give back to the youngins by volunteerin to coach a team. Chess masters will give tips to others. Body builders will let kids train with em to let the kids feel better about themselves and more confident.

Why should starcraft be any different?

So far my experience of online gaming has been arrogant and insulting players far beyond my sc skill level.
The term noob is one ive learnt from the sc community, and its one with a negative connotation. I can understand skilled players wanting skilled competition. And i can understand 'noobs' having an insignificant say about sc2 as the game is a tightly balanced and competative one.

Still, my experience so far says that starcraft communities do not value good sportsmanship.

I think the term 'noob' should have the negative stigmas taken away, communities should be supportive of the people who wish to take part in them.

Forgive me if i am mistaken, i only speak from my own experience. Perhaps if i read more of this forum i would see sc communities in a different light, but again the last thread i read was discouraging, and the people ive met online have spent their efforts insulting me and other people.

    Please prove me wrong.

ha i appreciate that red_dragoon :) yeah some people on the net have been really insulting, more than just callin me a noob they just get all petty and start throwin all sorts of bizzare language at me. And usually because they won the match haha i dont get it. I spose i just got unlucky with odd folk a few times in a row, frustrated me. People would never say anything like that to my face. Kewl about the noob tournaments i might check it out if i get the chance, im not often on the net usually too busy, but i still love a game.

It is good to get a kind response to that, cheers mate.

    good on ya, keep well.

Yeah, I'm the first to admit I'm a terrible player, but I have fun. Who cares what others think? They're just buggers with security issues, so they feel the need to tear down others to bring themselves up.

Another thing I'd like to clarify.....
There is a difference between a "noob" and a "newb"
    (MMORG Example cause it's easy)

    Noob
    GOLD/FOOD PLZKTHX
    HOW I MINE FOR FISH!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Newb
Hey, can anyone tell me where *Insert goal here* is?
    *Someone tells him/her*
    Thanks bro.

I don't really distinguish between "newb" and "n00b" that much, but I use it so much online and in everyday conversation that it has started to catch on within my social circle and family...for instance: if my brother drops his tootbrush, i say "noob." If John Mayer comes on the TV, I point and yell "n00b." If I'm driving and the person in front of me takes a left hand turn (right hand turn for you's guys in the UK) and stops in the middle of the road as opposed to getting closer to the yellow line so I can pass on the outside, I scream "noob." I think it has taken the place of "gay" in my vocabulary, because I've been trying to stop saying it and I've been doing pretty well. The other day, my dad called someone a n00b. I nearly shat myself.

But back on topic a bit, a big problem with playing SC1 online these days is that if you are a n00b (like me), chances are you will be playing against people who have been playing for up to 10 years. That's a slight advantage, if you ask me.

If I had a dollar for every time I've been called a "n00b" for dumb reasons I'd be an incredibly rich kid. I spend most of my time playing custom games so I play defense game, rpgs, impossible scenarios, etc. In one defense game I was called a noob when I "leaked" 2 enemies. So he said "omfg blue sucks so much hes a noob." I just said "......" So the next round begins and I've fixed my defense and I notice he leaks a bunch over maybe 8-10 or so. I dont say anything, just smirk at how much of a hypocrite and how he must be feeling seeing them rush through his base. He ended up losing the game for us so that pretty much made my day when that happened.

In rpgs, I've only been called noob a few times one of the times someone even blocked me to my death and someone else that didn't block me called me a noob, so I was glad that guy that blocked me didnt't say it or I'd spew profanity at him. I ended up leaving without revenge on that guy who called me noob for practically no reason.

Oh my, in impossible scenarios I've been called a noob or something else so many times for dumb/no reasons at all. In one scenario I had an archon, arbiter, and dark templars. while some other guy just had 2 goliaths and a science vessel. When I we were thinking of a strategy some random guys plagues and storms use(backstabs us) he kills my dark templars and damages all my units while damaging the other guy's goliaths and vessel also. The backstabber's zerglings kill the other guy's gols. I just noticed so I quickly uncheck the backstabber's ally box, My archon kills a couple zerglings surrounding the defiler and templar while another bunch comes up behind my archon. My archon(does by itself, i wasnt controlling it at the time) goes after the defiler and temp instead, killing them both, but ends up being killed by the bunch of lings behind it because my archon was already weakend by plague and storm. The guy says, "sigh.. oj its all your fault you suck." I say, 'What....." He says, " if you didnt target the defiler and temp we would've won. you should've aimed for the lings." The backstabbers just laughing. I say that i wasn't controlling my archon at the time but he doesn't seem to hear me since the backstabbers spamming the chat. The guy says, "see you later oj and stop making bad decisions you dumbf**k." I was so angry I actually said "oh shut the f**k up I didnt know he was going to backstab us you stupid b***h. "lay off and stop being a bas***d." he leaves.

I don't see why so many people act that way, I mean c'mon. And sorry for the large post,I just had to share that.

Edits-fixed a couple misspelled words and typos.

The term "noob" in SC isn't meant to be negative. It's more of a descriptive thing, to gauge a skill level.

Well. Im an average player, maybe inside my community (Latin American) im a little bit better than average, but im not arrogant or anything when I win, but I do love to make fun of those who I beat that have mocked or underestimated me because of my and my partners score (we have a bad score because we only play against good players, and we never kick partenrs, even if they are newbs). Also, I think having a bad score is actually good. The times the enemy underestimated me and I ended up kicking his ass are endless.

It is more or less consent that noob carries a negative meaning while newb is almost a compliment.

Headstock, I'll say this here and now, buddy.

People who deliberately give ppl crap out on the internet really are having problems of their own. I will not even try to sugar coat the term "problems." They have problems. Some of it is subtle problems such as a touch family. Some of it is just a need to be destructive in a fairly "safe" environment, but their knack for destruction is there. Or they just haven't quite grown up yet.

I've personally seen very many ppl on B.net who are wonderful folks. They help you out, they sometimes offer to ally on a 1v1 purely based on a good match or some good conversation throughout the game. I dunno what it is, but you get the feeling that you almost know these ppl in real life, and that you could just about trust your kids with them. Cuz some part in your being tells you that if someone, in their anonymity in a game that focuses on competition where it serves as a ballpark for their darker nature, still takes the time to be nice and considerate and not self-boasting, then you probably are dealing with a truly nice person in real life.

    That's just my take.

I personally wish there were more ppl like that on b.net and in the internet in general. But it's just not the case. I hope it doesn't discourage you, man. Cuz like I said, the one's who are nice really serves to inject some optimism into our lives :)
