So, I've heard custom games on Starcraft II are.. well, poor. I've heard it's hard to get people into your custom games as a mapmaker (you have to publish your game onto the server and no one can find it, or something?), as well as the same maps are in the most popular so there the only maps that gets played.

I hear it's not as good as the system that Warcraft III had, is this true? I'm a Blizzard fan, I've played many of their games, currently waiting for Diablo III to come out (Diablo II was my favorite of all games Blizzard has made - truly quality) and need something to pass the time on, so I am looking at buying Starcraft 2 - I'm just wanting to clear a few things up as I don't want to be buying it and not being able to play a variety of custom games, as this is the primary reason for me buying the game.

You will definitely be able to play a variety of custom games. However, most of what you have said so far is true. The map must first be published, and then the mapmaker must spend time hosting his/her map in order to get it out there. Your map needs to become crazy popular in order for it to be regularly visible to players. Otherwise, it takes waaay too much effort to get to the least-popular hosted custom games. The system is absolute ****. It's as if Blizzard only expects there to be 20 or so good custom maps available at any given time. The system is worse than any other hosting system I have ever experienced.

I'm sure blizz will change it when they do their big battle net update.

The system is flawed in how popular maps remain popular and new maps are impossible to find players for. However it does have many advantages which will mean with tweaking from blizzard it'll be ALOT better than the WC3 one. Battle Net hosts the maps for you so you download the map BEFORE you enter a lobby so theres no waiting in that regard. Additionally battle net hosts the game for you so you don't have to sift through 80 DOTA lobbies (Each map is just 1 button then you let battle net do the rest for you)...I guess in that regard their current system is better than WC3.

If your overly concerned about it Regi i would wait for Blizzard to fix it however battle net 2.0 does remove downloading and hosting issues.

Interesting .... good to know. Its unfortunate that Blizz dident have this issue resolved upon release .. but hey what can you expect, as long as they fix it i guess its not that big of a deal ... that is if they fix it.

The custom games I've seen are pretty fun, let's all hope blizz lets us play more than just the same maps over and over though >.< I'm sure with bnet they'll fix it soon enough... "when it's ready"

    so true... so true...

I loved the way that Warcraft III battlenet worked, Its a pity that less popular maps come up less, as they are the ones that need players.

I would advise map designers to show off you map on forums (like this one ;) ) to get fans, as just being on battlenet will not get you any fans.

Imo it seems that every big decision made by Blizzard for Starcraft 2 has been a way to get more money, does anyone agree?

Uh, duh...? Of course they're geared towards making money. Heck, I'm betting if Blizzard wasn't afraid of the public outcry and negative publicity, we'll also be on pay to play like Korea.
