depends on how popular sc2 will be when it hits ur local video game seller store shelfs. if u think it will be sold out when its released then go ahead and pre order it. if u dont think many ppl will buy it in ur area cuz theres no one who plays SC in ur area then u can wait till its officially released.

what im hopping is that we can get beta keys for whoever preorders sc2.

I think a good rule of thumb is not to pre-order something until the company making the product has atleast given something close to a release date.

I've lived in 5 major cities, and I've never seen a walmart or best buy sell out of the games retailers claim will be "sold out" on their first day. My opinion is don't waste your money, even if they are right about the release date your not going to find it hard to get a copy. This game isn't that popular despite what most people believe its not even gonna be main stream when it releases.

My response to this is the same as to all of the other people that have asked this. If there were zero problems getting a Wrath Of The Lich King standard copy on day one then there won't be a problem with StarCraft 2. However, just to be safe, I am going to pre-order the Collector's Edition.

Also, most companies don't charge you until the time of shipping. If you've read that stores FAQ then you might want to consider going to a different store.

Pre-orders are useless in my opinion. There are always only so many people that can get a copy right away. If you are the 100th person to order the game, then don't count on getting a copy on the first day.

That being said, I'm waiting for the special edition anyway.

Reliable stores have at least one copy per pre-order. That's why you pre-order. When you give them your money, they order you a copy that is just for you. If 100 people pre-order, then they ordered 100 copies for those people.

Let's just say that this wouldn't be the first time that my local store couldn't supply the number of games that were ordered beforehand. It seems that there often is a limit to the amount of games they CAN pre-order.

The same goes for consoles, by the way. I remember several big store chains here appearing on consumer show stuff on tv, with people complaining that they didn't get the stuff they ordered. Yeah right, as if a store can get 400 Wii's on the first they. I laughed my *** off. 400 Was about the total number of consoles for the whole region on the first day. xD

And just to give an example of when it last happened with me trying to buy a game: I still haven't managed to get my own copy of Fallout 3.

@Aurora: Like I said, reliable stores :D That means Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, or whatever. I know these websites put a limit on how many pre-orders they can take because I'll just be cruising through the selection and see "Pre-order limit exceeded". Have mercy on the poor souls that deals with EBGames or GameStop.

    I've preorder'd a copy already.
It doesn't cost anything here though.

I pre-ordered Fallout 3 GOTY edition from Ebgames.ca and got it on due date. Figure that one out. What are the chances.

$100? What is the expected retail price of most PC games where you live? That looks like 200% of what I'd pay.

This is what I always say when the preorder thing comes up: you can have hardware shortages, because hardware is hard to manufacture. Software shortages are just distribution problems- unless you live in the middle of nowhere, and expect to be beaten to the store, or your time is just that valuable, don't pre-order. It will be much cheaper to grab a copy on the release day, with better chances if you go earlier in the day. If you live in a densely-enough populated area, you can try a couple of stores.

On top of that- if you really expect to be playing SC2 for hundreds of hours to come, delaying the start by a few days ought not be a huge deal.

I'm personally hoping that Blizzard opts to do digital distribution with SC2, but I don't remember ever seeing any news in that direction.

I live in Miami so there's millions of people in a fairly tiny spot. Thankfully, none of them play any in-depth games so I have never have a problem getting any game I want :D

As for digital distribution, I think they've already said they plan to do this. I'm not sure but I think it was announced back when the new Battle.net store was put up. Then, again, that could've just been for past games.

I mostly buy my games at Free Record Shop, which is the leading chain in Holland. But if that doesn't work, I can always try special gamestores. I expect those to have plenty of copies when people have been waiting for 10 years to get their hands on it. :)

DeckardLee: that's the feeling I got. I know that they support digital distribution on their other games, but I can't recall ever seeing it noted as an option for SC2.

If they are doing digital distribution, I'd think that pre-ordering would be out of the question for most people.

I pre-ordered (at a discount, not a premium!) Borderlands over Steam. There was a slight disadvantage to getting it that way- Steam unlocks games the afternoon of the release day, as opposed to midnight, as most stores do. If Blizzard does anything like that, one would still be at an advantage buying it from a store, but even then you have to ask yourself, is an extra twelve hours worth $pre-order fee$?

And do you really not want a nice box with the disc in it? I know I do. Maybe we'll even get the chance to obtain a manual this time. Still have to make due with the rubbish pdf version, which doesn't contain anything even remotely usefull. Only install instructions and stuff like that. "Insert the cd into the tray..." Oh really? I was already wondering how to do that, with the manual being on the actual cd and all that. *facepalms Blizzard*

But seriously, having the actual game in a physical box is more important then anything else.

What is the Special edition ? What's the difference with the normal edition ? How many time will it get released after the normal edition ?

Well I will buy this game normally at the city center of the town I live (Brussels) in a shop called 'FNAC'. This shop has always a huge amount of products (so in this effect the price will be at the standards) in its stock so if I don't find Starcraft 2 inside the shop I can ask a seller to go to the stock and bring me another copy. That's exactly what I did with Starcraft : Brood War on March 1999. The game was released at the official release day, and I came early in the morning. The sellers had not put all the copies inside the shop yet so I asked a seller to bring a copy to me. I followed him at the door of the stock room.

I was THE FIRST customer to get SC:Brood War in this main shop of Brussels !!

But 10 years have past. I am sure this game will be sold between €49,99 and €59,99. There is another shop near the FNAC. This is the 'Media Markt'. Sometimes the price is lower between €4,99 and €9,99. So I will start with the Media Markt and then if the price is lower or is the same in the FNAC I'll buy at this last one.

Starcraft 2 will probably be the most important title for the shops in 2010. So some differences of prices, even low, can advantage a shop and not another. Of course I will not make 30 kms to buy SC2 in a shop because the price is cheaper of €2,00 or €3,00.

I will pre-order the special edition, no matter what! I guess it will feature special badges and icons for in game use...
