So it was the day after Christmas and I was like I want a new game for my ps2 so I went out and bought shadow of the colossus and I have had a somewhat mixed reaction. First of all i will go over the pluses: The graphics are amazing, the colossus fights once you know the trick to beating them are enormously fun, and the story is interesting. The minuses are the facts that you only fight the colossi and that is all there is to the game. I mean the gameplay when you aren't actually fighting the colossi actually is kind of annoying and pointless. Something I am undecided on is the horse. I cannot yet decide if I find the realistic horse control annoying or awesome. so overall even though people were raving about this game a while back I am not sure I can get behind it. Any one else have an opinion on this game?
I liked Shadow of the Colossus as a work of art at least as much as I liked it as a game. Some complain about the fact that the world is so large and only has 16 enemies in it, but I thought that it gave the game some of its charm. I would actually spend hours wandering around the world looking at all the scenery and exploring. The players who just go through the game for the story are missing a good 70% of the world, and some of the coolest scenery I have ever seen in a game. If one needs nonstop action in a game, there are plenty of other games available to deliver that.
I don't think I have any spoilers in this post, since it is just a summary of the backstory and game mechanics. Shadow of the Colossus is about a boy named Wander who enters a forbidden realm of colossi to revive a girl named Mono, who died because she had a "cursed fate." Wander is accompanied by a large horse by the name Argo. When he enters the temple at the center of the land, strange voices speak to Wander, telling him to use the sword he acquired to slay the colossi roaming the lands, causing the destruction of the statues in the temple. Once all the statues are destroyed, the voices say, Mono's soul can be returned. The colossi are usually massive beasts who have specific weak points that Wander can locate using the rays of sunlight reflected from his sword. He must climb on the colossi to stab the weak points. The fights include action and puzzle solving elements. Before each fight, Wander must track down the colossus he sets out to kill by moving in the direction indicated by the sunlight shining off of his sword. This can take some time, as the world itself is massive and the routes are not always direct or in view of the sun.
