now i've seen a few mass queen videos from husky and HD, mostly as a lark for placement matches or other fun matches. Day9 has 2 videos where he's showing mass queens (+roach backup) seems to be a very legitimate strategy in ZvZ. hard to pull off, it takes quite a few tries to get the timing down exactly, but once the queens are properly massed up it seems nearly unstoppable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT-7lirWpiM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOfp7We1qss
(Watching the videos now) I've tried it a few times. It's definitely strong (one of the reasons the Queen got a speed nerf) but it is extremely hard to pull off because of all of the Transfusion micro you have to keep up with. Queens + Transfusion will buy you a lot more HP than Roaches, but it sacrifices a ton of mobility (stuck on creep).
@10-Neon, if it's ZvZ, then there should be plenty of creep to go around. Not sure it would work all that on ZvP or ZvT though.
creep is important- you can see him plopping down 3-4 creep tumors in a single group, which does spread creep 3-4x faster than a single tumor. the most important thing, though, is that he can use this strat to defend against standard strategies- the main issue, as presented by the videos, was a zergling/baneling bust, which he can usually defend against with his build order.
He does show one 4v4 as well which well, they lose hard. Focus fire and win, but ye its a potent strategy of course. Everything is winnable but everything is beatable as well.
The primary thing I'm worried about is how mass queens would fare against heavy roach play. It's generally difficult to theorycraft these things because so many complex interactions are going on. Mass queens will definitely be something to keep our eyes on once Phase 2 rolls around.
A long time ago there was a joke game where my opponent went mass queens and it seemed to me like they couldn't deal with roaches at all.
yeah, they wouldn't do well against roaches. that's why this strat is actually queen/roach, with the queens being the main tanking unit AND anti-air for the roaches.
What about Hydra/ling against it? Lings to take the brunt of damage, and the hydras range and crasy dps to kill the queens and roaches. You can also focus fire, so transfusion is harder to use.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQn7EjxAfzw another cool queen transfusion video. =) It is hard to do but the payoffs are huge. Also, you aren't susceptible to air so it's stronger than just pure roach builds. One of the primary difficulties of the strat though is the need for additional hatcheries to keep up with production as Queens are not spawned from larva.
