In SC1 (I have the Power Macintosh version) the CD key is printed on the paper inserted into the back of the cd case. And still today I can read the CD key very well. But for D2, LOD, WC3 and WC:TFT the CD keys are on a white sticker stuck onto the CD case. And I know my D2 and WC:TFT CD key stickers are fading. Soon I will not be able to read them. My whole point here is that I much prefer the whole SC way of doing it cause then it's behind plastic shielding it from the elements or our gureasy dirty fingers. And I really hope for SC2 they do the same thing here for the placement of the CD key. Do you all agree with me?
Are you saying that copying and sticking it on again or behind the plastic is too much effort? Or as a worst case scenario you could make a note of it in your e-mail account which you can obviously access from anywhere. Having said that I don't even see how a key could get rubbed off. My SC battle chest one is still in perfect condition. Plus I wouldn't be too surprised if Blizzard didn't want it staying intact... people would just buy another copy or a key online.
My old Diablo 2 CD key stickers (cases without discs) have been through and hell and back for the last ten years and there's no sign of fading. Strange Either way, as long as I can see it without opening the case, I'm fine. Although, I'll, of course, save it as a text file or somewhere else once I first enter it.
Even though I only use backups to play games, that's pretty pointless given you can just throw in a .txt file on the disc and copy and paste it into the CD key prompt. Sorry if you were joking.
Today, you can also register games with your CD key and download the client from Blizzard. As long as you remember your login account, you'll never need another CD key in your life. Just download and install. Piece of cake.
The CD key is in your blizz account once you put it in once. Like Kink said, you'll never need that CD key sticker in your life after input.
In your life? That's a long time. Think of all the things that could happen to the main site and their records during that time Plus, isn't it more likely that you would forget your login information (thus locking you out) than it is for you to lose the original CD key sticker assuming you're careful with it? I still say the .txt file option is best. Not that it really matters. At all. Gee, I must be bored to have typed all of this over nothing. GIVE ME TEH INFOS BLIZZARD!!1
I'm starting to think we won't get any significant info untill BlizzCon '10 (where only D3, WoW Cata & SC2 will be shown, nothing on the new IP yet). OT: I've never lost a single CD-key. I don't see how they can become unreadable after time...it's a sticker...inside a dvd case...which you put somewhere out of the way... Like has been said, put it in your email and you're 101% safe.
The D2 and D2xpac CD keys were printed on stickers on the outside of the case...in what appears to be ****y ink because they do smudge over time. At least every copy I've seen looks like that. I wish all games would just have the key right on the disc. For some crazy reason I got the urge to play sim golf last night. The CD was on a spindle with other games I don't play anymore and I had to look around for awhile for the original case with the key. Guess who took a sharpie to their sim golf CD shortly after? A bigger issue I worry about is the anti-piracy crap like securom EA uses. I bought Spore (a mistake in of itself) and had to torrent it the same day because the out of the box disc would not run. So I essentially paid for the case, the manual, and a piece of paper with that CD key.
Well according to Spore's EULA you did not purchase that case box etc, you only loaned them from EA for a unspecified amount of time. Don't forget the drink coaster/frisbee (unwanted disc) you just bought there too . But I agree with you about the smudging. it's so annoying. I guess Blizz didn't expect their games to still be popular 10 years after their release dates or they would have used better ink on the stickers.
