I'm new to the Starcraft series and I'm confused about the damage system. I understand the stuff about base damage and DPS, but I have a few questions:

    1. Some units are light and some are armored. Does armored mean that the unit takes less damage from attacks? If so, how much less?

    2. Some units apparently get a damage boost against armored (like siege tanks). In that case, being an armored unit is actually worse than being a light unit - am I correct?
(yes, some units get bonuses against light units, but those units seem to be much less common)

    3. Do all attacks hit, or do some attacks "miss"? If attacks miss, then are there small units less susceptible to damage than larger units like Thors? Is there any "high ground" advantage, like a group of marines at the top of a ramp attacking marines at the base?

    4. Is it possible to rally production buildings to a unit group? For example, I want my barracks to pump out marines to a certain spot where they automatically join group 2.

    1. No.

    2. Yes.

    3. Yes. High ground advantage is denied vision for your opponent and -1 vision range on ramps.

    4. No.

Generally categories in sc2 are (kind of)weaknesses since they only affect which spells can target a unit and which attacks it takes extra dmg from.

    for #2

just memorize each unit's counter, such as marauders counter stalkers, but zealots counter marauders, while zealots get countered by marines which in turn gets countered by stalkers.

That's strange. I always assumed that 'armored' was a good thing...guess not.

This is SC2, there's no such thing as a universally good thing... personally I LOVE my roaches for being armoured... they help against hellions. And I hate hydras for being light because hellions rape them, which ultimately makes the hydra useless in TvZ. There's a counter to everything and everything counters something ;)

    Two things in here....

Units CAN be rallied to a "group" they just won't join your hotkey selection. You just right-click and they will rally to a certain unit.

And Hydras are useless in TvZ because of the combination of Hellions and Tanks.

Hydras are useless in TvZ because they get raped by marines/hellions/tanks/marauders/

they are slow units, and Z needs to take advantage of Terran's low mobility by making fast units (speedlings, mutalisk, fast roaches, fast banelings)

OK just to clarify, the numbers at the top of your UI are groups, not hotkeys as the vast majority of players will claim, so OP used them correctly, admin failed.

I'm considering putting this in my signature because it's so annoying and confusing for new players.

yeah... i get confused when I talk about it, but I know the difference.

hotkey = the letter key to select stuff (Z for zerglings, S for stalkers, T for storms, C for scan etc...)
groups = control groups to have a buildings and units onto 1 button selection

however a group of units binded to 1, couldn't you say 1 is a hotkey? since its a shortcut to a selection...

The fundamental difference between a hotkey and a group is that hotkeys are directly linked to what you have selected, while groups are universal, they always work, so to say. Though admittedly, I say location hotkeys even though they're universal as well - it's just a bit awkward that it doesn't group anything, unlike with buildings/units.

Since the options panel distinguishes the two it's best to keep to it, especially when discussing them with a new player.
