Hi, i'm experience this annoying thing when i play. I use the 2 line trick in variable.txt with 30 and 90 fps and most of the time i get 90 fps but when some building spawn or new unit i get low to 1fps for 0.5 seconds and get back to 90. But this thing in intense battle where i need micro is at least frustrating >=\ . I watch my temps on GPU and CPU and they are ok. Here is my rig config: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R, i7 920 @ 3.2 Ghz with CM N520, 3x2 Gb DDR3 G.Skill @ 1333 Mhz, XFX Radeon HD 4890, Seagate 320 Gb 16 MB cache. I think i update pretty much everything on drivers/bios side. Here is my dxdiag -> View attachment DxDiag.zip . I run out of ideas /try different settings but .../ My game is on High settings 1280x1024 + low light/medium shadows /and i get suggested ultra but still .../. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

BTW the first game is even worse ... I start getting habbit of playing replay before i go to multiplayer because of that ...
One more thing - i get such a frames drop only in starcraft 2.

This is the homepage for your GA-EX58-UD3R. Go there and download the following.

    Drivers - Windows 7 64-bit:
    • Intel INF installation
    • Intel SATA RAID Driver
    • GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver

I know you may not be using RAID, but currently dxdiag is showing this for you:
These devices are SATA but it seems to be that you want to use them in a RAID configuration (my buddy has a setup like this with a RAID-0 and it kicks serious butt for loading StarCraft II). This would increase your performance a butt ton (that's right, I just said butt ton).

The other thing is, your SATA driver that these drives are plugged into a controller who's driver doesn't appear to be installed. Perhaps installing the above drivers will make the "ATA Device" disappear.

What was you intention with getting 3 identical super awesome super fast drives? Even if you setup a RAID, you can still partition them like one large drive, and have different partitions for different stuff. My buddy's drive is partitioned like this:
    C: SYSTEM 40GB
    D: SWAP 6GB
    E: GAMES 300GB
F: OTHER 454GB (Rest of drive).

Yeah, I setup a partition just for the swap file (like a Linux setup). This way the swap file NEVER needs defragged using something like Perfect Disk Pro.

Quiet a few people (Bluestar's thread is the greatest example). He also has an X58 chipset so... look into his thread here!

Thanks for the reply. I'll try that and come back with result. Btw i don't have 3 drives, it's one drive but with 3 partitions /one for windows and some programs, one only for game storage and one for my personal/work files/. And you were right i never install these drivers because i don't have more than 1 drive so i thought i don't need drivers for raid when i don't have raid, but now i see it show them as ATA, so i guess i was wrong :D

When i try to install Intel SATA RAID Driver i get this -> [IMG] and when i try the trick to enable AHCI from the other thread you pointed i get BSOD when i restart my PC after regedit modifying.

Another update :) -> it seems that GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver makes the problems so i remove it, make the trick for AHCI and enable it, then i had no problem to install Intel SATA RAID Driver. Few more restarts and i'll come again with the dxdiag and test from Starcraft 2.

I install everything except GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver and i don't think to install it for now /only makes problems + do i really need it i don't have raid?, with it my machine hang even when i try to restart/. Here is my new View attachment DxDiag.zip file. First game after starting the game is still choppy sometimes but i think overall is better /didn't see it to go under 70fps even in 90vs90 supply battles. I'll test some more these days. Thanks again for your help TheXev

Read that thread I linked to. It will explain how to enabled AHCI. He has an X58 chipset like you and it really REALLY helped him, and it will probably help you. Check it out. You have a 6GB/s drive, and it could benefit from this. You may not have RAID, but the Intel driver contains the AHCI driver on top of the RAID, and you can think about enabling it until after the driver is installed. The thread links to a guide that will walk you threw step by step. This helped him out with his massive performance issues (which are similar to what you report!).

Yes, at least attempt to install the Gigabyte RAID driver, it too may contain an AHCI driver for other SATA ports. It doesn't hurt to try.

Yes i install it and now use it as AHCI. For sure it's at least better than before. Thanks again.

Bluestar reported that his sudden drops in frame rate are now completely eliminated.

If you reinstall Windows, you may need to use a "boot mode" driver for your motherboard to avoid all that hassle of regedit, etc.

After some heavy testing/gaming :D these days i find out that it's still make the same thing ... I even overclock my CPU to 3.5 Ghz but no improvement. Start to think that its from ati video card ... People with slower PCs in other games play SC2 on higher settings with no drops in frames BUT with nVidia video cards /even gtx260/. I was thinking of net issues, but this drops happen even in replays so ... I don't know anymore, maybe in some future drivers update from ati :)

I read about some driver revert to 10.3 that fix that issue i may give it a try today.

i use intel's new rapid storage drivers
there former sata driver solution is now discontinued which is still found on many motherboard manufacturer download pages
just go to intel's download page and look for intel rapid storage drivers
and yes to confirm this has completely fixed my pausing problem for starcraft 2
your using your hardware's full potential through the intel sata drivers instead of the legacy ide ones
u might have 2 types of raid controllers (like my motherboard)
i have the intel ICH0R (the superior one) and the crappy marvell one
make sure your devices are plugged into the intel and use the intel controller
    don't bother with others
currently the intel one is one of the best raid/ahci controllers right now, it's hardware based

I think i fix my frames drop. I'll test some more today but for now i use 10.10 beta drivers for ati /better wait for official release though/ and this variable config file from here -> just make ingame to be windowed (fullscreen). I didn't get single lag when watching replay even on 8x, so definitely go check it out.
