So we all know that Project Revolution is working on StarCraft in the Warcraft 3 engine. They're also having a very difficult time. But now Blizzard has (obviously) created a superior graphics engine for the StarCraft universe. Wouldn't you guys (especially those of us who still love the original and its older units) love to have a Blizzard made (official) StarCraft mod for SC2? It would pretty much be the original game run on the new graphics engines. And since they're already doing the unit skins and animation for the Original units to be used in the map editors, it wouldn't be very much work at all to simply have a mode that would allow you to play the original game in the SC2 engine. Of course, it wouldn't be a big deal for people to simply make this mod on their own, but it would inevitably be of much higher quality if Blizzard were to design it.
i doubt blizzard will bother doing it, but they are making it very easy for modders to. I remember in one of the interviews blizzard said that an original starcraft mod wouldn't feel the same mainly due to 3d.
I reckon there really isn't a beneficial reason for the Blizzard team to do so. Firstly, it would consume more time, leaving us to wait even longer to buy the game in store. Also, if that mod would be to happen under the hand of official game makers, the (future) mapping community of Starcraft 2 wouldn't have such a great project to work on, themselves. (I still remember a huge Starcraft mod project for Warcraft III, done by regular mappers. That was awesome.) Lastly, not all original units are to be found in the sequel, so, they would have to create them just for the mod. Again, that would consume time, effort etc.
Blizzard wont do it. But anyway we dont need blizzard to do it. All the game campaign dialogues and sounds can be extracted from the CD. The maps too. So its all about copying the maps by hand from one editor to the other one (I doubt there will be a tool to upgrade sc1 maps to sc2). Then its just importing the triggers and the sounds. Actually I think I can do it, and there are a lot of people better than me at modding out there, like the people of star alliance or campaign creations.
The biggest problem would be that the faulty UI in SC was part of the balance. Scarabs seemed to be drunk half the time...
Well, I don't think it would be hard for Blizzard to release a SC1 mod for/with SC2. Think of it this way: they already use SC1 assets (sounds, portraits) as placeholders for SC2 units, they're testing each original unit to see whether it will "fit" with SC2, so they would obviously have to create the art for it, so a SC1 "mod" of SC2 would simply incorporate unit art sound, and code that has already been made. Now of course, asking for this mod to be as balanced as SC1, to play exactly like SC1, would be asking for a lot, but I don't think we're really asking for that, are we?
Thanks for clearing that up 10-Neon! I just wanted them to basically copy it over to the SC2 engine. No changes, etc.... It would basically be upgrading the code, or simply just removing new SC2 units and putting in the older ones..... Not sure exactly what it would take... I said in the original post that of course we could do it, but it would be MUCH better supported if it was done by Blizzard themselves and included standard.
You know what would be awesome? Make Sc1's stuff be playable against SC2's new toys. This could happen in melee mode but not on ladder. When the game opens, you get to choose between 6 different races. SC1- Terran, Zerg, Protoss OR SC2- Terran, Zerg, Protoss Yea, it would seem imbalanced but it would be fun if your a pro and going up against a noob and you can choose to become the SC1 race. It would add some fun factor to the game.
Many people want everything in this game. Blizzard already created SC2. It is finished right now. And Blizzard has no time to create another game for us, the nostalgic. Normally Blizzard had to create the exact structures, with the exact units for Starcraft 2. Did you notice something ? There are too many changes (even the new siege tank is a change) that SC2 seems to be another game, not SC2. Do you understand what I mean ? It is nearly like SC1, but ..... highly different. Maybe will it be better ? I'll see in the future, once I'll forget SC1. We have to forget Starcraft 1. I voted for the second proposition.
