Okay so, what exactly are EVs (Effort Values), what do they do, and how do I train them. Please give me a detailed explanation but not too confusing, please do not just give me a link to a website...
I never figured that out either. I'd heard about them and that fighting certain pokemon would raise it differently, but no one could ever give me a detailed explaination about it. Personally, I see it as a myth, as I never noticed a difference in battle ability between mine and thier's. Then again, I've only known a very few ppl that claimed to have figured it out.
It's not a myth, they exist, even if they aren't mentioned somewhere in one of the games. The base stats, the DVs, the EVs and the traits all have influence on the stats of your pokemon. The base stats dependent on the sort of your pokemon and you can't change them (e.g. every magikarp has the same base stats). DVs (Deter Value) could be called the "genes" of a pokemon, you can't change them, they will always stay the same and are selected randomly after you cought the pokemon. Ever stat has his own DV value, which can be something between 0 and 31. EVs (Effort Values) are a little bit more complicated, since they are the only thing you can influence during training. The EVs are limited in two ways: there only can be 255 on a single stat and only 510 on all stats together. Because of that you can only maximize two of your stats. You can get these EVs by fighting other pokemon, every pokemon will give you at least one EV on a single stat. I don't have a list with what gives you what at the moment, but you should be able to find one with google or on every better fan page. Alternative to training the EVs can be increased by the "vitamins" (carbon and so on). Each of these will increase a single stat by 10 EVs. The traits also influence the stats, there are neutral traits, which don't influence anything, and traits, which increase one stat and decrease another at the same time (there should be lists somewhere, too). Just as an example: Salamence with 31 DVs on every stat, 255 EVs on Attack and Speed, trait: adamant (+ Attack, - Sp. Attack): HP: 331 Attack: 405 Defense: 196 Speed: 299 Sp. Attack: 230 Sp. Defense: 196 Salamence with 31 DVs on every stat, 85 EVs on every stat, trait: something neutral: HP: 352 Attack: 327 Defense: 217 Speed: 257 Sp. Attack: 277 Sp. Defense: 217 The differences are obvious, aren't they? Just let these 2 fight against each other, the first one will win, it is faster and has a stronger attack, the slightly higher HP and defense won't really help the second one.
That changes from Level to Level; On Level 100 4 EVs will improve a stat by 1, but on the lower Levels you need much more EVs to get the same effect.
