Recently I've been beaten by a few Zerg players, even though I scout, because they simply mass Roaches and just overpower me. When I see this build coming, I always go collosus. But roaches are armored. Are Immortals worth trying?

immortals are great against roaches. but since roaches dont attack air u can always go air, but the he'll counter with hydras.

Immortals, Stalkers and Zealots should steamroll it hard time. Immortals are a good counter unit to roaches, but you will also need counters for zerglings, and maybe air.

    Let me sum it up:

Notice how the Immortal does increased damage against Armored targets. You might think that the Collosi will be able to handle them in groups, but in fact the damage is to far spread out. If the enemy player simply keeps their roaches spread around and burrows them to regenerate, you'll never get them down. A single Colossus would take over 12 shots, or 19+ seconds, and that's without the regen included!

Immortals on the other hand, can take out a Roach in 3 shots, or 4.35 seconds. So 3 Immortals 1 shot a Roach, while you need over a dozen Roaches to kill an Immortal that fast. Just make sure that you have proper support against Zerglings and such, (which might be in the form of Collosi, but Zealots are also really good) since those will quickly kill your Immortals if they are at the front of your attack force.

Simply put: Immortals vs any armored type unit, and Collosi only versus large clumps of low hp units.

stalkers and roaches are equal units.

if i remember right stalkers have a 7 range while roaches have a 6 range so as long as you fight the roaches off the creep you should be able to micro and kite them somewhat but yeah, an immortal or two and some stalkers should work very well.

so just get some zealots or charge zealots in front to take the brunt of the damage with some stalkers and an immortal or two behind the zealots so they are protected.

Personally, I would go roaches and stalkers so you have something to fend off a possible air attack. That's a pretty amazing combination when it comes to fighting, well, not just roaches but life in general.

Amberlamps, don't post when drunk and/or stoned. :p

....actually, that's a great idea. WTB patent for a breathalyzer on your PC. It automatically locks out pre-designated programs (e-mail, forums of your choosing, etc) if you're over the "do-not-say-something-that-will-haunt-me-tomorrow" limit.

Can you make it include Facebook? That'd be sweet. :p

But to add something useful to this post: also bring an Observer when fighting Roaches, especially later on in the game. As if the rapid health regen while burrowed isn't enough already, you really don't want them to tunnel ahead and surround your units.

Aurora, remember that collosi attack double, so its more like 6 attacks.

When I scout and see the first few roaches pop up I usually go for stalkers and zealots with the charge upgrade and of course sentries. I haven't tried immortals but I'll try them out next time thanks!

But it's not on all on the same target? :/
I'm not a huge Protoss player myself, but from my experience, the Immortals are more effective. Especially since you can get them out and upgrade them before you even have the prerequisites and resources to get a decent amount of Collosi.

The collosi make a double attack on all units on the splash "line" it makes. So if the game goes on so its a giant ball of Roach/Hydra, collosi would be good. But getting an inmmortal or two out before getting collosi would be good.
