whever i play protoss i usually go zealots with upgraded charge and stalkers with blink. they also then go mass void ray and kill my stalkers easily and i lose. i scout early but by then there is no stargate up. should i scout twice, once early and once later. how do i counter mass void ray should i rush this
Stalkers, especially blink stalkers, easily kill void rays. Your opponents must simply be out macroing you.
Should you scout twice-- I dont think you have to, instead scout slightly later in order to get a better idea of what is going on or find some info on void ray rushes and see if you can spot the telltale signs a bit better. How do you counter mass void ray? Well I see that you are upgrading your units pretty early, which is okay if you are able to produce more units while upgrading them. Play against a computer and try your build mainly focusing on unit production and see just how many units the upgrades take away. Against void rays you need more stalkers apparently but I wouldn't quite sacrifice blink for them. Instead I would either get less zealots or remove the charge upgrade to focus on stalker production because stalkers in general come in handy early on. Once the void rays hit, make sure you intercept them as early as possible. This is to minimize the time the void rays get to charge up their laser. I would probably just blink underneath the void rays in order to do as much damage as possible early on and take them out before charge is set. And finally, as far as rushing is concerned, you should try to poke into their base if you kill the void rays without taking extreme casualties. Unless you are extremely confident in the situation, don't just go all in if there is a good chance you will do damage but fail because even if you do significant damage you can still be completely destroyed by any void rays that may have been produced and sent to your base. Just make sure you don't leave yourself completely vulnerable As long as you are doing well economically and have warp gates set though you should be in good shape
your initial probe scout should be in his base as long as possible. if he goes 1 gate-core with 2 gas, there's a high chance he's rushing a Stargate. and you gain additional info by doing an early observer or pushing/harassing.
your initial army shouldn't have charge AND blink, you are cutting down too much resources and time, this is why you are getting out-macro'd. Use your chrono boost for your workers and only your first unit.
it seems like whenever somebody attacks me with void rays i have stalkers and i always lose. how can this be. how should i attack the void rays. should i just do a simple attack command. i usually circle all my stalkers and hit attack on one void ray which is proabably wrong but i dont know any other ways to attack.
It would help a lot if you could attach a replay. (You can do that by going to additional options, which are below any new post you make)
Replay of your problems would be good, so we can say whats wrong instead of gueesing. If you have Blink, blink under the void rays and let the stalkers do their job, if you dont have blink, attack move, then move a little closer so all stalkers can attack, and then let them do their work. If you have too few stalkers, remember to have 3 probes on each gas and about 20 on minerals.
Well, here is something we should actually clarify---- how many void rays typically hit you at once? Also, how many units do you have at the time(how many of each unit as well)? How many resources do you have at the time of that initial attack? Has the other player been passive that whole time? Has the other player expanded? Have you expanded? Typically whenever I am attacked by void rays early on they come in small numbers, often less than 3. That makes it easier for my marines to clean up the VR attack. Also, as far as your attack on the void rays, If you have blink (which i highly recommend over charge early on) then blink your stalkers underneath the void rays and focus fire them down.
Stalkers are a great counter to void rays in small numbers. Focus fire all of your stalkers on one void ray and kill them one at a time. Hopefully you will have warp gates so you can crank the stalkers. Also, a 1 or 2cannons by your nexus will prevent him from charging his void rays on your nexus--he will have to focus on the cannons (or be killed by them), which won't allow him to power up as well as the nexus. The only counter to large numbers of void rays in a PvP is large numbers of your own void rays. Once he gets the flux veins, he will frustrate you to no end with hit and runs. Maybe I'm just not good enough, but I don't try to counter mass air-to-ground units with mass ground-to-air units. The air units have the space, speed, and mobility advantage. (Perhaps phoenixes in sufficient numbers could hold off mass void rays, but I don't think I'd want to make that many phoenixes.) If you're making stalkers and you're still getting dominated by void rays, it's because either: (1) you're not making enough stalkers, or (2) you are allowing him to mass too many void rays, at which point stalkers aren't as helpful. What is your plan of attack in a PvP? You're going for charge and blink--those are great upgrades, but how are they going to win you a PvP, especially together? What strategy does chargelots beat? What strategy does blink stalkers beat? What strategy does both together beat? If a Protoss blocks his choke and you can't scout, then he is probably going either immortal/colossus or void ray. Depending on how he blocks the choke, you may be able to break it with mass zealots or zealot/stalker/sentry with immortal support. A robotics build can help here. Make an observer and see if he is going colossus or void ray. If void ray, crank some stalkers and make your own stargate to make void rays. The stalkers can help you get an expansion, since you will have the advantage early one. But, you will need your own void rays as the game progresses. If he's going colossus, either crank some immortals and attack, make colossi of your own, or get some phoenixes to pick them off.
I hate void rays. i play terran and when the protoss gets to 10 charged void rays I lose the game. The only way to win that is to have like 40 teched up marines to kill it off, but somehow they always get me.
Mass void rays are not the only thing to stop mass void rays. The other day I got to about mid game PvP and was building stalkers, sentries, and zealots. All of a sudden there were about 10 VR that came in to attack my probes. I had 2 cannons, so those slowed the VR down enough to get my stalkers there. Once my stalkers started attacking the guy moved his VR out of attack area. Then I'd move a bit to go attack, then he'd bring the VR back. Now, I made the mistake of building more stalkers, thinking that I'd leave some stalkers in my base and attack with my other group. I ended up losing the game b/c he just kept getting more and more VR before i could do anything. About 3 games later, it was PvP again, I had a similar strat going and then got VR rushed again with 5 VR. I fended them off with my stalkers, then this time, (thinking about the fact that VR are gas and mineral heavy, and slow to produce) figured, that I'd leave my stalkers there for a few more min, and build a starport and some phoenixes (not VR b/c they are slow). This totally worked. I was able to continue to warp in stalkers, sentries, and zealots, and build some phoenixes. The next time he brought his VR in, i was ready. I only had 3 phoenixes and St, Se, and Ze. Guardian shielded my stalkers, and sent my phoenixes to attack theVR. he attempted to run with his VR, but b/c my phoenixes are faster than VR (and can shoot while moving), they tore the crap out of his VR. I brought the rest of my army to his base and wiped him out b/c he had nothing else but VR and a bunch of photon cannons in his base.. Moral of the story - I've played 10 1v1 games and 5 2v2, but I've had enough of the VR rush. I'm still a noob and still lose to some rushes, but getting better.. 3 phoenixes were enough to save my base and win the game knowing that VR are so heavy on resources and that phoenixes can fly fast and shoot while flying. Good luck!
The same thing applies here. If you know that you have a large chance of getting screwed by VR, you should try to get some vikings up. Vikings (while in air mode) only attack air. Therefore, they're strong against air. Use them.
Not only that, but Vikings would also take care of a potential colossus rush, then you also already have your marines and marauders to take care of any immortals, etc. vikings serve dual purpose against protoss.. obviously though, if they're not doing VR right away, you might not have the need for vikings. Another thing - vikings take 42 sec (30ish on faster) to build, VR take 60 sec (45ish on faster). Obviously if you are able to fend off the first wave of VR, you should hopefully be able to get some vikings up in time.
are those times counting the double production speed with a reactor attached? (I tend to make at least one SP with a reactor just in case I need to pump vikings out fast)
How effective are immortals against void rays exactaly? If at all, or better yet what are immortals effective against in general?
immortals are not effective against void rays because they do not attack air. Immortals are effective against tanks and any high damage dealing unit because they take less damage from these units resulting in an excellent meat shield. As far as vikings are concerned: protoss players tend to transition out of void rays once they are shut down so remember to put any of those units to some sort of use (harass, scout etc.) while keeping a few so that they do not take up food
Immortals cant attack air - Void rays are Air. Immortals are good against things such as stalker, marauders and roaches. To upload replays. - Go advanced -go down and manage attachments - upload file - find replay.
