I was just scouring the interwebs and I found this: http://www.n4g.com/pc/News-382553.aspx

Basically what Blizzard will PROBABLY do (isn't confirmed yet) is allow traditional LAN play after authenticating everyone's CD keys through battle.net.

    Blizzard dev Greg Canessa:

“Maintaining a connection with Battle.net, I don’t know if it’s once or periodically, but then also having a peer-to-peer connection between players to facilitate a very low-ping, high-bandwidth connection… Those are the things that we’re working on”

I find this freaking awesome. It is a perfect way to allow honest players to enjoy LAN play while also making sure pirates can't do the same. People without an internet connection will probably be screwed however, but come on, if you don't have a connection to the internet then I am sorry for you.

I assume the only people to complain about this will be pirates, but what are your thoughts guys? I personally am a huge fan of this.

Mass Effect had a system like this set up. Every seven days, it would dial into EA's servers to ping the serial. They pulled this after three months due to the fact that if the EA servers crashed once, it would be one week from the uptime that people could play their game again.

I'm totally 100% for pinging Blizzard on initial install, then allowing LAN afterwards.

What I propose however is like a stripped down version, for like 20 bucks that's JUST multiplayer (both B.net and standard LAN play) with no story or cini's.

That wouldn't really help against hackers, who could bypass the screen once and still play illegally.

And the stripped down version would just make it way easier to pirate it.

    Yeah

But pirates concerned with LAN play would be getting gypped out of the full experience see.

They'd go for the itty bitty 200mb file not the 2.6gb file.

I buy everything, but aren't all pirates playing on hamach servers anyway? No need to crack stuff, right? Hmm, I wish Valve tried harder to make Steam better. It sucks having to wait for those missing file downloads, but it repels most pirates. Seriously, it would give
the whole pc gaming platform a boost. Now pirates scare major developers away.

Meh, I'm going to play on b.net anyways. :D

I put all my beta information into b.net, but aren't they only giving out a certain number of beta keys? I didn't think everyone who opted in was going to get in, or has that changed?

I think in the end , blizzard will just make a annoying authentication system that will not let people play lan with a single copy , thus no LAN for a household just like CODWAW , **** you treyarch. I can't even play zombies and coop in CODWAW cause of ****ing authentication , and the ****ing game needs longer to load cause of this stupid "anti piracy" system.

And this proves it, it's from wiki : "" ... a system whereby a LAN connection is possible after first authenticating with Battle.net. """

And you look this, COD4 which is from Infinity Ward, does LET 2 accounts(or more) with single CDkey to play ONLINE , and that , simultaneously on even a same SERVER! Thats quality you pay 50 ****ing bucks for, Publisher JUST has to figure it out that there goes one copy per household 90% of sales.

I will never buy two copies for one household are you thinking that im so stupid to do that. especially if you get enFORCED by stupid "piracy" measures, they force you to buy another one to fully experience the game , even so , codwaw is crap game compared to cod4 , it's annoying, it's slow , unresponsive , plain, nothing remotely original as cod1 and 2, laggy , buggy , crashes cause of a stupid alt tab , maximizing takes AGES to load ,and when it does it says many times "server disconnects" , it actually doesn't, it's a crap authentication breakes and your're kicked out , **** you treyarch for craping up IW creation.
**** you activision too. Boby cotick cashcraping idiot. OVERPRICED MW2 ****ERS

Piracy is the "cause" when sales are bad.
When sales are good , nobody gives a crap *** **** about piracy.

If SC2 got's a chance at this , I think Blizzard seriously needs to polish this , or else im not into the annoyances just to play a ****ing match with a human being a ****ing 5 meters away.

EDIT: As you can see I am pretty angry at this moment , who wouldn't be , this is actual experience the games provide , see and prove it for your self you will find very similar results.

Your mindset is flawed...the better a game is, the more it will be pirated, and the less money the company will make.

So as a consumer you are going to pirate rather than buy a higher quality game, and buy rather than purchase a lower quality one?

ahhhh yes this was thing i was looking for. Something like appeals to me as it makes sense and really doesn't annoy the consumers to a large degree. I mean no one pirates valve games to get away from using steam, they just don't want to pay for them. So something like this seems fine in theory, hopefully more info (like an article) is given on this rather than a short comment.

LAN ftw, everybody knows its the best form of connecting media among others comparable to how efficient the atomic bomb is.. simple and a blast-full.

Actually all the people I know are the opposite. The trend where I am is to pirate all the little Applications/games cause why should spend $10 or $20 on something I'll use one or twice and can download in a few mins. But for something epic like SC or SC2 just buy it. Too much effort and time to download it. Easier to buy it + it helps out companies to actually make quality titles, not the little cheap garbage.
