(i am a protoss player, but now they just seem kinda rigged, i almost feel like rooting for the underdog)

maybe its just because they havent talked about the other races yet, but it almost seems like every advantage the other races had against protoss has now been overcame. like zealots are strong as f**k and shit but their only weekness is they lack range, but now they get to charge, why cant zerglings or firebats do that? and seige tanks used to be the king at taking out dragoons and such, and now the immortals come and tanks can barely effect them.

Re: the protoss mothership/protoss in general

I think there are already a couple of threads dicussing on this issue. They are under Heroes and Ultimate Unit section.

yea i realised that about the mothership part so i took that off, but i still think protoss is kinda rigged.

Well we haven't seen a lot of the other sides, so we can't say for sure. But we know this much:

Terrans still have their ability to liftoff and land buildings. That's a red chip in their favor; not a game breaker, but a nice play.
They still obviously have the ability to Nuke the enemy. That's another big point. And they are not tied to a power grid.
We have seen in screenshots the Terrans can bunker their troops. And they still have their battleships.

They also have that nifty new Reaper unit, which is quick, able to change elevation, and obviously handy for dismantling heavy defenses. The Protoss Stalker looks a lot more costly, and so does the Colossus.

That means from what we've seen thus far, the Terrans have the cheapest elevation control in their Reaper unit.
I didn't see anything with the range of a Siege Tank in the Protoss Arsenal.

That Colossus seems cool, but I never once saw it fire on an air target. I bet it's Ground Only. It's also kind of slow.

As for the Zerg... we didn't even get to see much of them.
We know the Hydralisk is returning, and we saw a lot of Zerglings, still aggressive, still mobby, and doing their job.

Then we watched them become Banelings and totally PWN the Protoss. In the demo, they never go back and kill those Banelings. A little too dangerous, maybe?

And then Mutalisks flew in and fought the Protoss from the air. They're still flexible.

On top of that, those Zerg Nydus worms came from nowhere. Were they burrowed and waiting? Did they punch up there at that moment? We just don't know.

    I think...
we have seen most of the Protoss' big cards, so we're all dazzled.
But the Terrans fought that one fight to a standstill with the few units we DID see, and it was the Zerg who won that demo in the end.
This game isn't over; it hasn't even begun.

Did you really watch the trailer? The guy running the demo showed how all those units could be countered. And they still haven't shown us all the new toys the terran and zerg get yet.

Good point.. actually.. it makes me think what new units they'll come up with to further to also counter the protoss and zerg units. Also the banelings probably cost a lot, as the damage they seemed to do was a LOT. Infested terrans from the original starcraft had the limitation of cost AND also the fact that you needed an infested command center just to create them. Then again a simple counter for them would be the phoenix's? Im thinking just overloading will take out a lot of them and of course won't have the problem of getting hurt by them.

    Re: protoss in general

True, but maybe they're both air and ground. Mutalisks presumably have the ability to attack ground and from BroodWar wraiths had the same ability. I dont see the protoss having scouts like they did, and that was the unit that was more or less the same as mutalisks and wraiths. The scouts were pretty useless though, for the cost they generally werent worth the effort.

What makes you think they cant do ground dmg? Just dont think they can because of the attacks they do and its look?

"What makes you think they cant do ground dmg?"

Well the zerg guardians were bombers that could only attack ground targets and the terran valkyries were anti air only.

    Re: protoss in general

I mentioned scouts/wraiths/mutalisks for possible reasoning for it being both ground and air.
You're just saying that because corsairs/guardians/devourers/valkyries are only one or the other that the phoenix is the same.
But as far as I can see this doesn't make either less likely than the other.
Is there any specific reasoning behind this statement for instance other than a hunch?

I'm just saying that its not unusual for a unit to be only anti air or anti ground. juding by how effective it was at dealing with air units (and nothing about ground units) I think its very likely that it is a specialist. Time will tell.

It gives me the idea that its the standard air unit for protoss, and a standard air unit should be anti-air and ground IMO.

    Re: protoss in general

Well I just rewatched the footage near the end of the demo and I stand corrected. It seems it can target land units however it looked pretty weak. It wasn't able to kill even a single marine (got about 8 shots in) before it was shot down.

Hmm I hope those three (phoenix, warp ray, mothership) aren't all they get for air combat units or some of the old units make a return cause it feels a bit sparce to me.

Anyhoo much remains to be seen and its all subject to change.

    Re: protoss in general

Just watched the gameplay video as well, the attack and ground attacks seem to be seperate attacks, such as the ones you see on wraiths (missiles and lasers). In the gameplay vid it fires 2 volleys of 2 lasers in reasonable succession a wait and then a repeat of this. It seems quite weak and theres no way of knowing whether it could overload on ground units. But I would say the overload ability is a key element about them as they dont seem strong in any way EXCEPT this ability which makes them look aright IMO.

Ok this topic is old. But now that more and more Terran details have emerged from the dust, we can conclude that Protoss is not too strong or rigged for the other races. The mothership is not all that powerful. Currently Blizzard has given the mothership 200 shields. The carrier had 150. So it's not "too powerful". The zealot was very powerful in sc1 compared to zergling and marine, so it makes sense to be more powerful in starcraft2. Blizzard wanted the Protoss to be powerful and expensive, and Zerg is cheap but weak. While terran is in between.

It's probably too early to conclude anything, as (as Blizzard has said repeatedly) nothing we've seen yet is necessarily final.

But I agree, they will most assuredly be balanced. Blizzard took careful steps to ensure this for SC1, and I'd assume nothing but for its sequel. Anyone that claims that any race is overpowered is either inexperienced or unfamiliar with the intricacies of balanced combat (namely, they ignored critical units by assuming that they were useless). It will be very interesting to see how the individual units find their niche in SC2. Can't wait...

I would just like to state that the Protoss are NOT too strong. ALL of the protoss units that deal lots of damage or have a big advantage in some way have major set backs.

    Examples:

Zealots: They have a new charge attack but marines in some SC2 screenshots apear to have sheilds (I meen like a holdible metal shield not round energy shields) to counter the charge.

Imortal: has strong shields to counter heavy fire like seige tanks but small arms fire takes them down with ease. Don't most people have marines near their tanks in general anyways? Bunkers? O yah, and they fire realy slow...

Colosus: has huge burning beams that cut through enimy light infantry quickly. This so far I believe is the worst unit so far... This beast can get hit by air and ground attacks (missile turrets) and the sheilds of it seem to be the opposite of the imortal (activates only against small fire).

    Need I continue? :-\

    From:
    In your head
The Colossus's shields work against any unit...

And there's no such thing as too strong or too weak. It's rather impossible to tell if they're too strong if we only know a few units of Terran and hardly any of Zerg.

Yay, someone else that thinks Blizzard might forget to balance the game before release. Glad im not alone. Plus how are Protoss the underdogs? Most advanced technology ftl?
