After seeing the Protoss units in action, it seems that the Protoss have gotten many new skills and abilities that make them extremely hard to beat in normal battles. Many combinations of Protoss units leave almost no holes in their attack and with the new movable cannon, have a much better defence than they did in SC.

The use of zealots and colossus will be a popular strategy in SC2. This combination will make them the ultimate force against short and medium range units and could even take on small groups of siege tanks and bunker defences. The only weakness would be a bombardment from siege tanks and thors and the fact that they have no anti air attacks. That would mean that they would be harassed by aircraft fire unless there is AA nearby. To counter this, the Protoss just need a few phoenixes and warp rays and they have the ultimate attack force.

Or the Protoss could build a massive airforce to attack the enemy. Large amounts of phoenixes, warp rays, and carriers, not to mention the mighty mothership, could easily decimate even the most powerful of defences. The warp rays and carriers easily destroy any air turret and bunker defences. The phoenix would be very effective against any aircraft the enemy manages to build for defence and the warp ray would destroy any heavy armored aircraft that gets within range. The carrier and mothership will be great against ground troops and buildings. Even massive defencive measures would barely be able to hold of an attack like this for any amount of time.

To really be effective, the Protoss could use both strategies, ground and air. Carriers and colossus would be extremely effective in any battle with their ability to do massive damage to many units at once. Unit defences would be decimated and wiped out before a matter of seconds.

It just seems that unless the player is new, the Protoss have many effective strategies that make them extremely hard to counter without having the units to counter their attacks before they happen.

I would like to mention the cannon needed something as it was almost impossible not to have them destroyed every time the enemy comes to your base in the original.

As for the colossus remember it can be targeted by anti air units. Missile turrets will own this unit also it is an anti infantry unit so don't except it to take on vehicles.

Also carriers. They will still fall quickly to yamato cannons. In a straight fight I can imagine that battle cruisers will win

They will win even without the yamato since colossus can't attack air anyway.

That's why any good protoss player will usually have air units with the colossus. If they were really good, they could make a few colossus before the other player has built any air units for a defence

Siege tanks have a very long range. They will splatter the zealots in no time leaving the colossi open for an easy kill

it all depends on what ratio of units you and they have as well as how good you both use them.

The colossus could be used as a shield as the zealots get closer then use their charge ability to close the gaps with the tanks. The colossus would be able to take a couple of shots before going down, allowing the army to rush the tanks somewhat shielded.

even if the protoss seem like their units are very powerfull, remember how expensive they are. A collosus costs 300 mins 200 gas, that's a hell of a lot, so if you say there are 12 zealots and 4 collosi, then any other race could get a lot more units than you think.

Forgot about the cost...that would even out the playing field a bit, quality vs. quantity.

I will still choose Protoss over the others when SC2 comes out.

That is more of a matter of prefering a certain playstyle. Blizzard is very good at balancing their games so I don't think we will have any problems

This is a really pointless thread seeing how nothing is final yet, and you have no idea about how much damage and health everything will have. Also, collosus is late in tech, an opponent can easily air units by the time collosi come out.

They do have the life and cost amounts online.

colossus has 300 life with 150 shield and I can't remember the cost.

Some things are finalized or are unlikely to change as the release date approaches. Its a good thing they got ride of the Soul Eater, cuz with it, the terrans wouldn't stand a chance of victory.

It isn't nearing completion, nothing is set ans those numbers are probably wrong since the game is tweaked constantly. Besides the Protoss will not be more powerful than another race because they will balance it.

But by what is known so far, some tweaking will be needed to balance out the Protoss vs. terran and zerg so they will have a better chance at winning than they have right now.

Its alpha of course tweaking will be needed. You didn't think the original Starcraft was born balanced did you?

Well protoss unit's are expensive! so that doe's pay up for the powerful and strangthness but it's just a race where there a expensive but yet slow! and iff You like fast and cheap then zerg! and iff You want mediumish then terran but they both also have their drawback's and bonuse's! and at the end of the day You just go with who is Your favourite and the one that most suit's You! , My favourite is Protoss! :)

That stategy of only using colossus and zealots with support of a few other units sucks pretty bad.
As a Zerg player I would just send some Scourges up there and the Colossus units will be decimated in no time, and I doubt a few warp rays will stop them. For the Zealots some Banelings and victory will be mine. Muhahahaha.......

Couple of factories with nuclear reactor add on for the terran and you can pump out enough vikings to easily take down whatever army of collosi is around, then just go after the base before zealots get back to defend.

lol, massing scourges and Banelings ftw!

Colossus and Zealots will own ground forces, but air would become a problem, even if you have anti-air, you probably wasted too much food and resources on the Colossus/Zealots.

A bunch of Immortals/Warp Rays would win against Colossus and Zealots, I believe. A BC plasma torpedo will own t he Zealots while the Vikings take care of the Colossus. Predators can kill air units. There are many counters to that strategy. Doesn't mean it can't be a solid one though. Depends on how accessible Colossus + Zealots are.

I think its way to early to say any race is to powerful, hell we haven't even seen the zerg! Also a lot of the concerns posted in this thread are based on assumptions about what the numbers for a unit will be. I can give you a 99.99% guarantee that no numbers are currently set in stone. The numbers are the most variable thing in the game because they have the greatest effect on the balance of the game. So while the Protoss may seem powerful we wont really know anything until we see the zerg and see some numbers begin to be set in stone.
