When its hit the shield looks very different than the shield from mothership/warp ray/phoenix, but I like it. Maybe a chance they change it so that all the protoss units look like that when they're hit?

    Re: Tempest shield

Perhaps that shield could be upgraded.
Instead of just having Air Armor and Ground Armor, and only one global set of shields, maybe they made Air Shields and Ground Shields, and those are upgraded shields.
Or maybe they gave the Tempest a shield upgrade ability like the Ultralisk's armor upgrade (goes beyond level 3).
Either way, I hope that there is variety among the shields. What a few games have been doing, but not very well, is making the units more changeable, and I'd love to see SC2 units change in response to upgrades and other such things. Already the death animations are a good start, but more more more please!

well, i think its DT technology, it is simillar to the way the stalker and mother ship blink in, so there have been a few changes, less round more octogon

    Re: Tempest shield

Yes, I like the octagon shaped artwork. But why do we only see the tempest with a shield filled with octagons? Immortal had round ones if I remember correctly (and true, in scale the immortal is probably alot smaller. Maybe the Immortal only has one matrix and the Tempest multiple. Who knows?)

    Re: Tempest shield

Or maybe the different levels of shields look different. And you can't really compare the Immortal's to the Tempest's. They're completely different.

Immortal: Ground, Aiur-esque (AKA High Templar), Hardened
Tempest: Air, Shakuras-esque (AKA Dark Templar), "soft"

    Re: Tempest shield

Yeah, but its a new unit made by the collective powers of aiur and shakuras... Why use different shields and not just the 'best aviable'?

    Re: Tempest shield

Its probably an upgrade, or a shield that holds stronger against a particular type of damage. (clearly not heavy damage, missile turrets / yamato cannons owned it. Im guessing the octagonal shields will hold strong against small arms fire, and possibly have an advantage against suicide attacks and spells. Who knows though.

    Re: Tempest shield

this could be a special type of shield, or just an improved shield graphics for the tempest, whatever it is it didn't seem to provide the tempest with a hardened protection against enemy fire power similar to that of the mothership, if you watched the leaked video, a tempest is seen destroyed after taking several hits from two rocket turrets

yer i agree the tempest is a good replacement, the carriers in the original were too big for the amount of hp that they had lol

    Re: Tempest shield

Btw, when the Tempest died in the first part it featured in (so not the archon part) quite alot of 'interceptors' (god knows how they are called now) exploded. It looks like these can carry 10+ interceptors.

something realated to the tempest many of the *new* protoss units are having a purplish colour instead of the traditional yellow of the protoss. I think its because they have to rely more on the dark templar technology since auir is gone. Any ideas?

Re: Tempests - post your views in here!

yeah, i see it too. the tempests, the stalkers, soul hunters... i think it's got to do with the storyline. i think the high templar wasn't so sneaky with their tactics, weren't they? it was the dark templar who employed the stealth tactics... so the blink belongs to their technology, sure thing. also, the special shields the tempests have most likely is due to their technology too... but how about the phase cannons? interesting about how they can move, maybe it's because of dark templar technology affecting the original photon cannons? just speculation.

Probably not, looks like normal protoss phasing tech.

I dont know about the phase cannons, (they are called phase cannon now) but about the tempest, stalkers and soulhunters, I recon that the dark templar are now the dominant protoss cast as the protoss are now rebuilding on Shakuras.

Yeah, I agree with Ghost. The new style of the units such as the Soulhunters fits perfectly with the Dark Templar theme - the old Protoss Dragoons are sticking to their dogged, tough ways while most of the other Protoss units have gained the silent, swift ways of the Dark Templar.

Re: I figured out why the tempest shield is different! (conclusive proof)

I agree, It looked like they had hardened ground shields sort of like an imortal to withstand quite a beating from ground units but were wide open to all air attacks.

"NOTE: they have not previously enguaged"

There is no proof for that!

Hey, your right... that means tempest must be the 'toss primary antiground unit or something.
It would make sense since everything has a hardcounter in starcraft...

This just keeps getting better and better :D
