I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how they get their protos Army off to a good start? I like to play them but seems like it takes a fair amount of time to get to a good battle ready stance to face the enemy. How do you start off your game? Do you get to 11 supply before going for anything else or how do you accomplish this while you are playing? What are some fast troops you make in the early stages? Do you go straight for stalkers or Zealots? End note, yes I am aware that Protos are not a beginners race but hey who dont like robots from hell? Thanks
A couple of things about Protoss: 1. Never (ok, rarely) stop making probes. More probes = more money = more troops. 2. Learn to use the chrono boost. Chrono boost your nexus so that you can make probes faster. Faster probe production = more probes= more money = more troops. 3. Make a pylon when you have 8 probes, a gateway when you have 12. 4. Get a cybernetics core early. If it's a 1v1 or you're not planning on rushing, make it right after your first gate. The only reason not to make a cybernetics core early is if you are going to zealot rush. 5. What units you make depends on map, matchup, etc. so it's tough to say. Most of the time you want a little bit of everything. 6. Don't spend too much money on cannons. Since cannons don't move, they can't protect your whole base and they can't help your allies. Also, if your opponent fast expands, cannons can't move out to stop him. You need a couple of cannons by your money (for mutas, VRs or Banshees) in the mid game, but you don't need them early. 7. Protoss is a specialized race. Their advatage is that they can tech quickly up one of their branches--making them strong in one area, but weak in others. For instance, you can easily tech to colossi, meaning you will dominate the ground, but this leaves you vulnerable to air attacks. Make sure you learn the strengths and vulnerabilities of each branch of their tech tree (1. charge/templar/DT, 2. Immortal/obs/colossi, 3. Phoenix, VR, Carrier) 8. Mobility is an issue. If you're playing v. terran, you have the mobility advantage. Be aggressive with your expansions. Make him come out to stop you, and fight him in the open plain. If you're playing v. zerg, you have the mobility disadvantage (but the strength advantage). Use the choke points and play conservatively, but don't let him out expand you. Look for heavy-hitters like temps and colossi to win a major battle for you and then counter. 9. If you're going to go heavy infantry, get charge, blink, and psi. If you're going to mix infantry and bots, make sure you get the range upgrade on the colossi. If you're going air, get the flux veins on the VRs. 10. Zealots are useful throughout the game as fodder. Even if your colossi are the real threat, you need to put a lot of zealots in front of them to eat up the damage. I hope that helps!
