Right, so, through my trusty sources, I found an interesting little Linux distro. It's called Xandros Presto and it is perfect for smaller notebooks/netbooks. You can't do too much besides web surfing and IM'ing, but that's why it's great. It boots up on my 1.6Ghz 1G RAM netbook in about 3 seconds. Literally, three seconds from Enter, and I can open up Firefox and get surfin. it comes bundled with Pigin, an all-in-one IM client, OpenOffice, a complete Microsoft Office replacement, as well as a link to the Presto app store where you can download all kinds of things, most of them free of charge. The only caveat is that the whole system costs 20USD to buy, which is definitely odd for a Linux OS. It's hella nice though for on the go computing, I use it for school. It is win.
This is truly one of the best -if not the best- thing placed in here so far. How much slowdown do new apps cause by the way? In Windows, every single program added seconds after a while...
I've only noticed bad slowdown if I watch a bunch of Youtube, but that could be my specs. Linux has like 60% of the memory leaks Windows does
Awesome. I think this will be nice for the laptop at home, slowness... To bad you have to pay $20 for the thing, and then another $20 if you want to have a the ability to play a dvd on it. $40 for a linux build is pretty expensive. Any idea if it suppots torrent programs? I might want to buy a licence then. I looked on that forum already, but it has so much thread, and I am lazy like that.
I know this is very offtopic, but Fenix, can you anyhow (easy ) import equation or something like that into open office?
For those of us who are cheapskates, I suggest taking a look at this article: Top 5 Linux Distributions for Netbooks
I was talking about the price of presto, which is $20 + $20 for dvd play + possibly more for other features/apps. Anyways, netbooks pre-loaded with windows XP only have a $25-$50 price gap compared to linux netbooks that come with a free distribution ever since microsoft lowered the price of windows XP for netbooks to $25. And often depending on sales, configurations, and other deals an XP netbook could even be cheaper.
Amen. But from that forum I get the idea that those guys somehow know what apps of them you have installed. And if this is Linux, should't it be open sourceI bet there are free versions of it out there. My parents do not trust these Presto guys because they ask money, and the laptop is still kinda owned by them, sooo... another build like this somewhere? This thing is kinda useless for desktops.
Yeah, there's a bunch of small Linux distro's, Presto is just well supported. You might try Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, or Slax
I heard about this distribution somewhere before, but I totally forgot about it until this thread. Ironically I only use my PC for internet and IM most of the time, but the occasional photoshop is necessary. What does presto have to offer in terms of graphics editing?
How awesome... Does anyone seriously preffers that over photoshop? And as far as I know, you'll never be able to use that in Presto. It would cost them tons of money to get a licence for using it legally. -since they would probably have to alter some stuff to make it work in Presto-
And I think chances are slim that such a thing wil ever happen. -PS on Linux- That's all. I really need to be more clear. :/
