How many players/AI should be allowed to participate in a single match? If everyone had quantum computers and a 10GB/s internet connection, I'd go for an enormous amount of people, but since we live in the real world, I'd say about 12 players per match is the best. It's the most fun when you have a ton of people playing at the same time, and although even 12 players are a lot, it's certainly better than having only six or having sixteen players have a go at it. Also it'll be awesome if you could make a map that allowed more players on it than the usual number, which would be especially good for those custom maps where a player only gets a unit or two.

You should make that an odd number since there has to be at least onehuman and most games have an even number of players

I would have to go with somewhere from 7 to 9 max AI

It would really depend on how well you can connect to battle.net

12 is about right in my opinion. 16 is overkill. I can't imagine having 16 players running very well, plus, it really wouldn't be much fun. Just chaotic.

For a standard SC game there should be more than 8-12 players but it would be cool to give UMS map makers an option to go to 16-20 for the max cap.

16+ FTW!!! I mean, if we are just talking about should, as opposed to arguing the obvious tradeoffs, However many people you can host should be the number of players that should be available. If you can host 32 people, by all means, have a 32 person starcraft map.

Would it be chaos? Yes, it would. But I love chaos in my games. 64 player CS:S + office = pure chaos.

I'll just buy everyone a Cray supercomputer and we could have one of those matches.

I think a max of 12 for a normal SC2 game is about max. I also think that UMS maps should have the option to go up to at least 16, 20 would be even better.

I can think of numerous custom games on WC3 which would work better if the player cap were higher. Further, if you give map makers the option, I'm sure people will come up with excellent uses for all the extra player slots.

Also, if someone wanted to make a UMS map and play an insane normal game of starcraft with the max cap of players they could. May God have mercy on their framerates but it sure would be an interesting game. Just think of all the combinations: 20 FFA, 10 v 10, Team 5, Team 4, Team 2.

Hehe, it would be lag hell.

There would be legitimate uses for it on custom games though. Hell for all of you evil DotA fans out there imagine 9 v 9 DotA matches. For others, imagine one of those whose the alien/murder/thing or whatever type games with 18 or so people. Good luck sorting our whose who in such large groups. Or think of any other game where the number of players has very little impact on the performance of the game. There are just so many fun things that could be done with such big numbers.

Also there might not be enough player colors to go around. You could always make ore, but y'know.

12 would be good for normal games, but for UMS maps there should be a 16 slot maximum.

    2) Will the new StarCraft II Map Editor support text coloring, unit coloring, player "12" (i.e. neutral player) units?

[Dustin Browder] Yes, all of these features will be supported.

So I guess unit coloring is no problem after all ^_^

max. 12 players sound good to me!!!! sometimes the max cap. in SC1 was not enough to make everything you want. It's funny but I know teams ( like clans or something ) with 5 or 6 members, and if SC2 supports more players, well I think we could have some interesting and more balanced teams for the multiplayer game mode

  20. just because there is a max cap doesn't mean you have to play at the max cap. i see no reason to limit the potential number of players everyone can play with/against just because i'd prefer 2v2 to 5v5 or whatever.
