My Pioneer DVD-RW-215D has been unable to Burn Dual Layer Discs, it starts up and frails at the beginnign or it says that there is a power compatability issue when attempting to burn

Driver has been previously updated to 6.1.7600.16385

What software are you writing with?

"power compatability issue" sounds like it's blaming the power supply. Does your power supply have a big enough wattage to meet the demands of the burner? Also, do you have the line voltages from the power supply? HWMonitor should tell you those.

Alternatively, it may be a firmware issue.

Try using different software, like ImgBurn. Its like Nero, but not bloatware and completely free. The newest firmware I can find for it is 1.22, is that what you have installed? Also, what speed is the DL disc you are trying to burn to?

My experience with that "power compatibility issue" error is not good. Last time I had that, I replaced my CD-ROM burner because the laser was giving up on life. Does it burn regular DVD's fine or only has issues on DL?

ill check to see what firmware i am on, which is probably that version, I have neer been able to burn a dl disc since i bought it a couple years ago. I generally havent had any problems with burning but maybe a disc here or there that doesnt quite play correctly but that could be the source files as well.

Its 16x I believe, the discs im not sure hat brand as its not labelled but has a white surface layer, they werent a cheap brand either

The DL DVD+R rating for your drive is only 10x, so if the DL media is faster then that, it MAY cause issues.

Thank God I have the NEC ND-3500AG, the best damn DVD burner to ever hit the market. It might be slow at DL, but damn does it burn good. 6 years and still burning like a champ.

*pets DVD drive* Now I just need a computer to put you in. *cries*

I'm still with my first DVD writer too :) I didn't like DVD much when I was younger, and I avoided it for some time. But as nothing better came out I reluctantly bought a drive as backing up with my CD writer was getting impractical with increasing file sizes.

This was an LG brand writer from 2005. I think it is 40x/16x and is also a DL writer. This was the first DVD related thing I had ever owned!

Easiest way to find out... try flashing the newest firmware. Most firmware tools for DVD drives will tell you what firmware is installed before flashing. If it reads 1.22 is already installed, then don't flash it. If its older, flash it and restart the computer.

Pretty simple. :/ Some drives you can check from the device manager, but others don't list it. This is the easiest method. This should improve the burning capabilities if the firmware is newer.

Yeah, just do a lot of research. I must have spent a week looking into burners back in 2004-5 when I finally landed NEC ND-3500AG... which by many is still considered the best DVD burner that has been made and ever will be made. lol

I think after that drive, burn quality took a huge back seat to burning speed.. hence all these drives we've been hearing about crapping out and can't even read DL disc let alone burn them.
