They're cool, you get different ones the more you play, you can associate with your race better or you can show off achievements. So why on earth do competitive players use the default one? I can understand pros because they have more important things to worry about or something but a great deal of people on ladder use it as well. Is it so they look more pro? Because this is the only (albeit retarded) reason I can think of. Please do enlighten me.
I'm assuming many people just dont know how to change it or just dont care enough to bother changing.
If i would do it the reason would be so that other people would underestimate me untill i win against them
They could also like it, plus while with the new ones you can associate with the race better, with the generic ones you can just associate with the human race more being just the average guy or girl or something
On some other forums, I actually read complaints about achievements and avatars -- not that the complainers thought they sucked, but they didn't like the trend toward these kinds of "frills". (And then there are other players, complaining about "frills" like chat not being in the initial release. *Sigh* ) So I suspect some of these players want to show they're "serious" by not taking advantage of new avatars. Alas, the avatars are useful for "bragging rights". If you've beaten 1000 random games, you really should be showing that avatar.
chat channels aren't a "frill" they were the backbone of what made SC1 great. The current integration is more friends-oriented and... frankly... sucks.
Frankly, default avatars just annoy me. Avatars are useful for instant recognition of someone, like a face. But then suddenly, everyone has the same face.
