I'm in the process of building a new computer ... parts I'm thinking about getting are gtx 460 1gb graphics card Intell i5 750 4gb ddr3 ram.. my questions are how do I go about overclocking and what fans ect will I need? I'm new to it so don't want to mess anything up!
Overclocking is getting more and more mainstream, and easier and easier to do, a lot of motherboards will make the settings for your automatically now, if you want. Being new to it, you would probably be suited in the fan department just picking out a nice case, which, will, of course, depend on your budget. The other investment you'd probably need to make, unless you are only interested in a small overclock, would be a new heatsink, the ones that come with the processor will get you a little past stock, but you are going to want a scary piece of copper with a big fan if you are looking for serious speed increases. What's your budget for the case / heatsink?
I want to do the most speed increase I can with everything while still being safe... heatsink is what I meant to say when I was talking about the fan. For the case I'd like to probably only spend up to 80 if thats even possible and the heatsink I have know idea... i guess just whatt is ever good enough without being too expensive.
My favorite go to case on a budget is the Antec 300 ($50-60). Nice, sturdy and has pretty decent cooling. With your budget, you can go with something nicer. CPU cooler, I really like Scythe for the balance of low-noise levels, cost and cooling. If you're not concerned about quiet, though, there are plenty of other coolers with similar or better cooling performance for around the same price.
I really like the Scythe Mugen 2, $40 (although I got mine from ewiz for ~$30 after coupon a while back).
Mini Cpu watercooler - $80 on Newegg Budget friendly high quality High airflow case and it sleak and clean, not ricey - also has great design in terms of build quality, wire tucking and tidyness, esata tray in the advanced version so you can slide a esata in right in place at the top, comes with 2 fans, and can turn off leds if needing to sleep at night with computer on
Yeah its the CM 690 Advanced II, version 1 looks similar but in a way sucks compared to this new one. The cm2 has areas for like 9 fans, all tool-less design, has a rear motherboard opening on the chassis and easy wire management holes. It can be had for a very reasonable price as well. $90 on Newegg
I know you can build a sick phase change system, or even piece together a beastly water cooler, but I think I read a review where a $30 Coolermaster heatsink provided nearly identical results to the Corsair H70 watercooling thingy. >.> http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1282225544&sr=8-1 That one, iirc. Edit: Maybe it was only identical cooling results if you added the second fan to the heatsink, trying to remember where the review was. Edit #2: Unrelated, but I am disappointed more and more every time I log into NewEgg, their prices go up, customer service down. gogo Amazon Prime membership, free 2 day shipping
Im lucky to have several pc computer stores within my province(state) that have multiple locations in each city, so i can check prices on each site and compare, and most of them price match and have differently weekly sales and rebate offers Canada computers tiger direct infonec lu computers ncix
Ah, you lucky devil, here in the states, we don't get much better than Best Buy, Office Max, Staples, etc, in most places. I happen to be in one of those places. And... well... no. Just no. But we do luck out with most of the online stuff ;p I've always been curious, how is the in store selection?
Only thing I don't have in my area is MicroCenter (~40 miles away, but in Los Angeles traffic, can take 2~3 hours travel time). I do, however, have several Fry's nearby.
