It has been previously confirmed that some of the units from the original StarCraft and its expansion StarCraft: Broodwar, such as the Protoss Dragoon and the Terran Firebat, would be playable via custom maps created in StarCraft II’s map editor. But in a very interesting interview, Blizzard has now revealed their plans for these units to return in StarCraft 2. The “old” units are intended to be included in the game’s single player campaign. This was revealed in a recent interview with Chris Sigaty, Dustin Browder and Bob Colayco done by Giantbomb.com. Blizzard also mentioned “some prototype stuff” being playable. These units or buildings are supposedly too powerful to be included in the multiplayer for balance reasons, but will be in the Campaigns. In the interview the developers confirmed that some “old units” such as Goliaths and Wraiths and Vultures will make a comeback in the Terran single player campaign, added to enhance Raynor’s current situation as a criminal, making use of whatever weapons and technology that he can get a hold of. “Brad wrote: Since you talk about there being so many choices on the tech side in the campaign, are there any differences between the units and the tech in the campaign, and what you're going to see in the multiplayer? Is there single-player-specific stuff? Dustin: So we're looking at having a lot of units, especially for Raynor as a mercenary, he's getting access to and buying technologies that are appropriate for the kind of down-and-out mercenary scumbag like he is. So he'll have access to things like Goliaths and Wraiths and Vultures, and all these old weapons that are not part of modern Dominion forces like we see in the multiplayer. Maybe some prototype stuff that would simply be way too powerful for any kind of multiplayer experience, but he can steal it and make use of it. So you'll definitely see not only new units, but lots and lots and lots of upgrades that simply would not be appropriate for multiplayer.” This news is not only sure to please the community, with hopefully everyone’s own personal favorite unit reappearing, but also make it buzzing with some great ideas! What kind of prototype weapons will we see? How will the old units look with new graphics? Source: GiantBomb.com
Congratulations to epo for submitting the first article that was barely edited. Thanks for making my life easier! Bonus 400 Minerals!
Neato. It will be interesting to see old units along side new. I bet one of the Protoss missions will invole the transition form Dragoons to Immortals
Can I say it. . . . F*** yes! The two units I was so sad to see gone "Goliath and Dragoon" are back. Well in Single player only which is understandable. They'd be out of place in multiplayer. Still I'm just so happy about this. That means there's a possibility that custom games could feature these units. Sorry for that, but I'm just so happy. And there's also this "down-and-out mercenary scumbag like he is". It was said in the article. And if that's true of the SC2 Raynor then that's so different to the SC1 Raynor. As in SC1 to me he was always such a nice chap willing to help out a cause for the greater good. I don't want Blizzard turning him into a rotten slimebag for an asshole. I liked the nice Raynor of old. Hope he stays like thar.
Most people know by now that I always want every little thing in a game to match the lore, especially if the story is any good, like in SC:BW. Now here is what I want to say: how are they supposed to use Dragoons if all the old Dragoons got converted into Immortals and the only place to make new Dragoons (the shrine on Aiur) got destroyed and infested by the Zerg? Oh well, I guess they will find a way. Like BirdofPrey said, maybe they will only show the transistion. Thanks for the idea. I really calms me down. (I'm such a lore-a-holic. ) Anyways, it's great to see that some of the old units are making a comback. It adds a lot more depth to the game. Thanks for a great article!
DUDE, the article's awesome, and it's sooo long, I really reccomend you guys to read it. I'll post some interesting things, that were probably already said, but still, nice confirmations. I liked that interview a lot. One thing got me really worried tho. They never said Battle.net was not going to be monetized.. Im not really sure what to think about that part of the interview. The8thark, they already said, Im not sure when, that the events of the past years really changed raynor, big time, now he is a frustrated sad guy. Most of the characters probably changed. Even Kerrigan, there has to be a reason why she was out of the public image for 4-5 years, and I dont think that was purelly meant to evolution of the zerg race... Im so much into the lore as well, i feel so nerdish D:
Great article, great read. Man, Starcraft II is shaping up to be incredible. Now, more than ever, I am sure that it is going to cause my downfall in medical school....
I think I'll be over my BA by the time I get hold of SC2 and a computer able to run it properly. My only worry is that I'll be brainwashed by the time I'd start my MA Can't wait to see the goliath in 3D.
this makes me happy considering i will probably end up playing the campaigns, owning for a week or two in multiplayer, then being trampled by 12-year-olds so any improvement on the single player is good for me
One Word (5 now) - YAY! LOL that's awesome, I always liked the Goliath, the Medic, the Scout, the Arbiter, the Corsair, etc... That could have been longer.
prototype units or buildings? nice. maybe mengks got his own super giant tank, unique capital ship, ion canon 2, fortress in the city of korhal, etc. in which you will do battle in the campaign. nice. the ums maps would be awesome. people will make a multiplayer games with all the units and buildings in the single player campaigns. maybe mods of a new race. imported dawn of war space marines, and starwars forces, etc. finally, starwars vs starcraft. terran vs the empire. xp
This is to do with the campaign, not just having nifty StarCraft1 and other units. The StarCraft1 units were going to return in the campaign editor anyway, so I don't see this making a difference that way.
Dude this would be so cool! You can probrably see the first missions of the protoss start off with surviving dragoons then the rest be the dragoons being uprgraded to immortals. love the return of old units.
