From the looks of nin's article... Blizzard is really focused on balancing.. But I personally think they may be TOO Focused on balancing. For some reason I think they're not being imaginative enough for New Niches (other than cliff walkers). I know some units HAVE to make a comeback .. and it's hard to build a balanced game without following the categories that you put up there. But I just hope they'll go all out on Zerg The point is.. this is still alpha/pre-alpha right? .. Not even beta yet... We should let their imaginations run wild or else we'll just get a 3d version of the SCI game.. For example.. Marauders, Pheonix, Stalker and Carriers are examples of units that aren't very imaginative... I personally thought the Tempest was an Excellent unit.. since warp ray and mothership can already fufill the capital ship role... The tempest can serve as an anti-ground assault unit (with its anti-ground shield) but be succeptible to air anti-airs... Marauders = firebats .. phenoix = scouts with an overload option .. whoopdedoo... I think personally (notice i always use personally haha) that Marauders should be a factory unit.. being the same tier as Tanks but a melee unit. So it is like a Melee assault tank rather than an Assault/Defense tank. The Infantry of terran already has enough support with bunkers and medics and reapers and marines... Stalkers at first I thought was a very bad idea.. But now after some balancing it makes an excellent support unit. However, it is an exact copy of dragoons.. so it is still lacking SOME imagination... I definately thought that those zealots holding psi-guns from SC ghost would be in SC II as a support unit.. but i guess not.. I also think the Nullifier was just like "hey guys we need 2 ground casters.. lets just make this orb like thing that erm puts up.. nullifiers and call it nullifier..." .. not very imaginative unit HOWEVER.. the spells work great for SC (especially that new anti-gravity thing.. that's SO good ) .. I think a redrawing of the unit would be good.. (or maybe i just didn't get enough news of changes to the nullifier) .. is it smth to do with dark templars? anyone? Of course.. Reapers, collossus, thor, banshee, phase prism, and the mothership and etc. etc. are all very imaginative and good. And also.. things like ghosts, zerglings, marines, medics, dark templars, zealots, high templars (wheres the low templars? =O) .. they just CAN't go away X.X.. it wouldn't be SC w/o them. Now why am i saying all this? .. I donno.. I just really wish they go CRAZY with the zerg.. Because.. the zerg (or the Nightmarish Invaders) were the first units to come out for pre-alpha starcraft... oh god so excited about zerg that i wrote this for zerg HAHA ~Unholy
Read my post in this topic: http://www.starcraft2forum.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=47&topic=358.msg151218#msg151218 I explain why the Marauder is not the Firebat's replacement. Also, Terran are all about range. They shouldn't have any melee units, which is why the Marauder is so great. Now Terran can stay out of combat much more easily because of the Marauder's slowing effect. It's a great way to increase their survivability against melee units without making them fit for melee combat.
I don't really agree with the justifications for saying the units lack imagination. The units' new abilities are exactly what make them distinct from that units that they appear to be mimicking. I assure you that using a Phoenix is nothing like using a Scout, apart from it being an air unit. They feel different in combat... their attacks don't have the same kind of punch as as the Scout, but Overload makes them even deadlier than the Scout in many situations. There's only so much you can do with an air unit... the Phoenix is about as different from the Scout as the Wraith was: different stats, speed, art, but most importantly, different abilities. The Stalker, without Blink, does act like the original Dragoon, yes, but that's because it is intended to partially replace the role of the Dragoon. As with the Phoenix, the new ability is what really defines the unit. Playing with Blink, knowing that you can stop a Terran from cliffing you without having to build transports, knowing that you can just hop into an enemy base via their cliffs, knowing that your enemy can't outflank you when you're using this unit... very different indeed. The Templar are the Protoss war-caste. Basically, the majority of combat units are "Low Templar." I think the exceptions are the Reaver, which I believe is a Kahlai unit, the Arbiter, which is a Judicator unit, and of course the Corsair, Dark Archon, and Dark Templar, which were exiled, so aren't strictly speaking, part of one of the defined castes, though we just call them Dark Templar.
