in the campaign "gameplay", it showed the player being able to choose which units he wants to buy before each mission. the problem is that the computer gives you a suggestion on what unit you should buy for the next mission (example, if your starting base was an island, then it would suggest dropships.) that means that there is no customization, because it suggests a unit, and frankly, if you dont take the unit, you'll have a hard time on the mission. so basically, if you actually had a brain, then you would do what the machine tells you. thats not customization.

    my idea - two parts.

    1) take out the "suggestion" machine (DUH)

    2) give some lore on the next mission... "planet X is 95% water with small isolated islands and little landing area... blah blah blah." if the player is smart, they'll think - "small isolated islands? hmm... i should get dropships or vikings." this makes it so the player has to think, and not just reading what he should buy.

    please discuss.

From what we've been told, I don't think it's a linear campaign, so it's not as though you've got to buy a certain unit type to complete the 'next' mission. On top of that, there appear to be upgrades for specific units as well, so you're not simply buying units, which would allow you to customise however you want.

Also, you've pretty much answered your own problem. There isn't simply one unit that would fit the given scenario. If there are small isolated islands, then buying Dropships isn't the only way to go. It's a suggested way. It isn't the only way. You can still make good use of Vikings, Banshees, Battlecruisers, etc. So, if infantry are not what you'd ideally like to specialise in, then you might actually go against buying Dropships, because they would only compliment a player with a strong infantry basis, and instead go along your own path of having a superior Air force, complimented with Walker Vikings, which would be more mobile than using Dropships on an island map. Seriously, Banshees for recon, Battlecruisers to take out static defences, Vikings acting as both escorts for your fleet as well as Ground-to-Ground fighters... Sounds a lot more spiffy to me than carrying a bunch of infantry from island to island. Granted, it would be more expensive, but, as I'd said, it's not linear.

I'm still confused as to how the unit purchasing system works.

As far as I know, the system is mainly for upgrading your units and structures but also purchasing inassessible units that are unavailable in a normal game.

Basically, if I'm correct, all the core units are the units you play on multiplayer and the units you already have that you don't need to purchase, but the system allows you to purchase certain units that are not already given (something like a hero system). If I remember correctly, Goliaths are one of them.

This system IMO is pretty awesome. It really gives you a true progress and reward for completing missions instead of moving from story to story. I think this system will become very important when it comes to fighting against the odds, like 1 v 2 or 1 v 3. This system will probably allow you to purchase all the SC 1 units not brought to SC 2 (like Goliaths), really allowing a vast variety of units.

Vikings replaced Goliaths, but if you can have both it makes your army so much more versatile.

you have the basic units that you can always build, like marines, scv's, and i guess medivac's, so you can theoretically do every mission without buying anything

then there are other units that you can buy through the credits system like goliaths, BC's and Thors

at least that is my guess

from what it sounds like to me, you start of with basic/old units, meaning that you most likely are able to build Vultures and Goliaths, but they might not be as good as the new toys that have been brought out.

My understanding is you don't start off with high tier units, whether old (SCI) or new (SCII) and you have to spend credits to buy the "right" to produce those units in missions.

It's an alternative to getting a new unit or two every few missions.

most of you guys are missing the point of the thread - im saying take out the little box that suggests what unit you should buy. watch the campaign "gameplay", and you'll see.

just because they suggested for you to buy the unit or upgrade doesnt mean you have to.

i've seen the vid. for that mission suggested that you buy Vikings, but you dont have to buy them and instead just plow through the Protoss bases to get to the artifact that they were protecting. The suggestions are just to help make the mission easier, but you can just ignore it and do what ever you like. They are not forcing you to buy the Vikings just to play that mission.

Siege tanks would have been useful in that mission too, I believe (if they were available).

The suggestions also keep the game from getting frustrating for lower-skilled players.

You sure about that? That system would look pretty flawed if it was true. What if there were missions where you need to have dropships but you haven't brought it and lack credits to buy it?

Describe a scenario where you would absolutely need dropships?

Besides, i'm sure blizzard would give you with a trigger if you did and you just wouldn't be able to make more.

Then you'll do other missions until you have the credits to buy Dropships. It's not a linear campaign.

That's not necessarily the case, especially if it's the recommended unit for a particular mission. They wouldn't suggest anything you start with, like a Command Centre, so if it is, then it won't be readily available, regardless of how reasonable it sounds to anyone.

Regardless, you do not have to do that mission.

They had it a lot in SC. In fact, there were used a few times and were very very popular.

Bringing Tassadar and 2 zealots to the infested facility was one.

I probably could, but I dont like the idea of being forced to play other missions when I want to focus on the main story line. That being said, if it was just one side mission then I'm fine, but if I accidentally spent all my credits on other upgrades only to realize I need to play 5-6 other side missions in order to obtain enough to purchase dropships, then I'll be pissed.

You're not being forced. You've consciously chosen to spend your credits on other units to augment your force. Besides, you should prepare, and buy necessities first. On top of that, you have no clue how many missions you'd have to play to afford them. You're just trying to ham it up so it looks worse.

On top of that it's still a non-linear campaign, so there isn't a 'next' mission, regardless of whether you're focusing on the main storyline or not.

Lastly, simply saying you don't like that idea because you'll have to play other missions until you can afford the Dropship is like saying you simply don't like the idea of failing a mission because you don't want to have to redo it all over again.

You see where the contradiction is?

I'm saying that if I do spend all my credits purchasing upgrades and not dropship, but only to realize after reading the mission briefing that I need 5000 credits when I only got 860, then like what you said I'll need to complete around 2-3 more side missions depending on the credits I get per side mission. So in a way if I'm not notified before hand that the next main-story mission requires dropship, then I'd have to work on side missions for credits. I'm not making it look worse, I'm counter stating your arguements with the points you stated.

Also, no I don't like to fail missions because I don't want to do it again, who likes to fail their missions anyways?? I usually quit and come back to it a few hours later. RTS like starcraft gets you stuck in tough situations. Sometimes you have to play for over an hour if you have a 2 v 1 or 3 v 1 situation. I like to play side quests, but I also want the option to be able to do it as a side quest.

I think you'll have access to all vital units without having to buy them. I would expect you automatically have access to marines, SCVs, command centers ... and dropships. (I consider that a vital unit, as without them or drop pods, you simply cannot conduct island warfare.)

We're all stumbling in the dark and still arguing though, which is kind of funny if you look at it another way. (Picture several blind people, who have never heard an elephant described, touching it and trying to describe it to each other. One touches the trunk, another the ear, and another a leg, and they can't agree with each other...)
