Since the Brown Box (a.k.a. the Magnavox Odyssey) made its debut in 1972, the video game industry has thrived. We have had bad games, we have had good games, and we have had games that stand above the rest, games that defied its entertainment medium, games that revolutionized and changed the industry forever. In countries all around the world, this unique form of entertainment has challenged the minds of kids and adults.

Of all the games out there, there are some that stand above the rest, games that you will never forget, games that you will always want to keep playing. This list is my list of the Top 10 Video Games of All Time. You have probably all heard of them, you all may have played them, and to those of you that have, there is no doubt that you will ever forget them.

PLEASE NOTE: This is my list. This is completely my opinion. If you think I will be offended if you call be a scrub and talk about my mom because my picks are "wrong" then you are very wrong.

    Here it is.

    NUMBER 10

Castle Crashers -- Xbox Live Arcade

This game isn't too popular. It is a download for about 1200 Microsoft Points (about $15) on Xbox Live Marketplace. It is an arcade side-scrolling platformer. You control the knight of your choice with the quest of helping the king to get his stolen crystal back from an evil wizard (the main antagonist of the game) and to rescue his kidnapped daughter (the princess).
Castle Crashers' mix of sword-swinging and spell-casting action in a colorful, diverse world makes for a very addicting game. It is just way too much fun to put down. The game also throws in some mature humor, hilarious boss fights (giant mutant catfish, evil ears of corn), and fun multiplayer action.
Where this game really steals the light, however, is in co-op mode. You can play with up to 3 other friends locally or through Xbox Live, and it is one of the best times you will ever have with a game when playing with friends. The game is not easy however; it is still very challenging at times, and you will have to work together to beat the game.
If that's not enough, the game also offers something called "Insane Mode" after you beat the game. This mode is extremely difficult alone, and still very challenging with friends. If you really want a challenge, look no further.
If you want in my opinion the game with the best value ever ($15, so worth it), then look no further than Behemoth's Castle Crashers.

    NUMBER 9

Mario Kart DS -- Nintendo DS

A few years ago, my family, their friends, a few of my friends, and myself were in the Birkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts camping during a 4-day weekend during the summer. I came back to our camper from the pool to find my sister, 2 kids, and a friend of mine all sitting on the couch, table, and floor of my camper laughing and staring at their Nintendo DS's. I asked them what they were doing, and they told me that one of them had Mario Kart DS and the other 3-4 people were wirelessly connected all racing each other and having a blast.
About 3 hours later, it was 1 AM, my DS had just died, and I had been through about 20 races and wanted more. You will be extremely hard pressed to ever find a game that is as much fun to play with friends or online through Wi-Fi. With a plethora of tracks, both new and old tracks from SNES and GameCube Mario Kart games, tons of Nintendo characters, and each with 3 unique karts to race with, the only thing that will be able to pry you away from this game is the Super Bowl, sex, death, or a dead battery.

    NUMBER 8

Sonic the Hedgehog -- Sega Genesis

In 1998, for my 5th birthday, my dad told me he would let me play my 1st video game. That game was none other than Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. Forget Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, whatsherface, and all that bullcrap that would follow the tremendous success that would follow Mario's only sales rival, all you need is Sonic and a reason to beat the crap out of Dr. Robotnik and you have yourself a legendary video game. There's really not much to say about this game other than the fact that it satisfies every 2D sidescrolling fiend's (like myself) appetite for a great game. This game INVENTED boss fights. I am not kidding, if you want some boss battles you will never forget, this is your game.
If you have played the original Sonic, then you already know how good this game was. If you havn't, you cannot call yourself a gamer. You can download it through Xbox Live Arcade for the same price as Castle Crashers, $15.

    NUMBER 7

    Contra -- NES

I really don't have much to say about this game because I was only able to play it for a few months, but this was the first violent game I ever played, I was about 7 I think. I also never owned the game, but I went over to my friend's house almost every day in the summer to play this game for the simple reason that IS WAS FREAKING AWESOME. We just had an awesome time shooting stuff in this classic side-scroller. If you never played this game, for God's sake pick it up, it can't be more than 5 bucks on eBay. It's better than mcnuggets.

    NUMBER 6

Pokemon Red/Blue Versions -- Game Boy Color

Most readers of this list will be like, "But, but Nick, but Nick, with every game you list you give us some memory of it from your childhood. WTF?" Well too bad, because here is another one. Back in 2000 my now-passed step-grandparents bought my 2 sisters and myself brand new Game Boys for Christmas. They also got us each a copy of Pokemon Blue version. At that point in time, my video game addiction's roots had been firmly planted in my little mind.
This game was a BLAST. Every day for at least 3 hours I would be playing this game, trying to level up my Pokemon, especially my Squirtle (ftw). I would be making my way through the world and just having a fantastic time. This game's combination of cartoony graphics and immersiveness (is that even a word?) made it an absolute smash in the late 90's and early 00's. The replay value was almost endless.
If you have never played this game and have a Nintendo DS, you can pick up Fire Red or Leaf Green for cheap, which are essentially the same things as the original with better graphics.

    NUMBER 5

Halo: Combat Evolved -- Original Xbox

In the gaming world, a "killer app" is a game so great, so groundbreaking, so unique, that the consumer would buy the console JUST to play said game. Such games were Super Mario Bros., the GTA series, the Metroid series, the Final Fantasy series, and more. Well, for the original Xbox, Halo 1 was that game. I myself scrapped my PS2 and bought an Xbox so I could play Halo. This game's epic story, decent graphics, insane gunplay, and addicting multiplayer makes it one of the greatest First-Person Shooters ever. Only 30 seconds after being handed a pistol and soon finding a rafle on the ground, you are thrust into action and the story of an invasion of an alien race known as the Covenant.
I loved this game for more than just bloody shootouts, but because of the great story. The Campaign is just awesome. And when you get done with it you can play locally with 3 friends for an awesome multiplayer mode. The only online play available is through the PC port, which is great fun with 16-player battles.
If you have never played this game, you simply...have to.

    NUMBER 4

    Goldeneye 007 -- N64

To me, this is another game like Contra that I never really owned completely but myself and my best friend split the cost of an N64 to buy this game many summers ago. We would take turns having this game at our houses, and since we lived right next to each other, we would go over every day and spend quality time playing this game.
I have one thing and one thing only to say about Goldeneye: IT IS, WAS, AND FOREVER SHALL BE THE GREATEST FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER EVER CREATED. It was simply amazing fun to play.
If you have never played it, PLAY IT, if you have, PLAY IT MORE.

    NUMBER 3

    Starcraft: Brood War -- PC

Here it is. Starcraft is hands-down the best strategy game ever made. It may even be the best PC game ever made. It is near perfect. You just don't quit playing this game. It came out in 1999 and I just got done playing a match 10 minutes ago. This game is at #3 because of its replay value. The 2D pixelated and outdated graphics don't even matter, it is still hella fun to play.
There are moments in Starcraft that no one will ever forget. Blizzard truly created a masterpiece. This may also be the best game ever to play with your friends...Starcraft LAN parties are just awesome. Never, ever, has bombardment and annhilation been so damn sweet.
The balance in Starcraft is also perfect. And I mean perfect. The three races flow with the game in an amazing way.
    Starcraft in one word: Superb.

    NUMBER 2

    Super Mario Bros. -- NES

October 18, 1985 was a fateful day for our favorite entertainment medium, for not only was it the day of the release of Super Mario Bros., but it was the day that Nintendo started its trip down the road of gaming nirvana.
Super f*cking Mario Bros. can't be argued with. It is like the Chuck Norris of gaming. Now old, but still, no one talks sh*t about it, because it is LEGENDARY. Everyone on the planet has at least heard of it. In Soviet Russia, Super Mario plays you. And it plays you everywhere else too. The 2D platforming action keeps you glued to the screen for as long as destiny allows.

Only Mr. Miyamoto's game creating genius could pull off #2 and #1 spots in my top 10 games of all time.

I'm going to pull a discovery channel here, and go back to the full list of the top 10 so far, and then move on to #1.

10: Castle Crashers -- Xbox Live Arcade (2008)

9: Mario Kart DS -- Nintendo DS (2005)

8: Sonic the Hedgehog -- Sega Genesis (1991)

    7: Contra -- NES (1987)

    6: Pokemon Red/Blue -- Game Boy Color (1996)

    5: Halo: Combat Evolved -- Xbox (2001)

    4: Goldeneye 007 -- N64 (1997)

    3: Starcraft: Brood War -- PC (1999)

    2: Super Mario Bros. -- NES (1985)

    And now...

    *drum roll*

My personal, number 1 video game of all time.

    NUMBER 1

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- N64 (1998)

The concept behind video games it to entertain you. To make you happy. Any game that does not induce fun or happiness at some point is just not a good game, no matter how bloody, scary, gory, violent, or whatever. You get the idea. That is why Ocarina of Time is my Number One best video game of all time. I, like many others, finished this game with a huge freaking smile on my face.
Even if you are not a fan of the Zelda series, you have to respect this game. It is f-l-a-w-l-e-s-s. It is such an addicting game, such an EPIC game, that no other game in the genre can touch it. It is on another level.
You get so immersed into the fantastic story that you almost forget that reality exists. Miyamoto is a gaming genius.
If you have played through this game, you know what I am talking about. If you have not, for the love of all that is holy, play. this. game.

Well that's my top 10. Thanks for reading everyone. I'm sure this thread will be filled with QQ/flames/hate and that is exactly why I will not be including an "honorable mentions" section. There are just too many great games out there to list.

    Thanks for reading everyone.

Castly Crashers? And you played old skool games? Why not choose a classic game such as Metal Slug? Kinda interested in that.

Mario Kart DS?, Pokemon?, Halo? Are you kidding me? I'm sorry dude everyone is entitled to their opinion but I have been playing games for over 18 years and that list is pathetic.

The only thing decent on there is Contra in my opinion. A lot of those shouldn't even be your top 25 or even top 50.

Never heard of "Halo-controls"? Just about every shooter after Halo copied that method. It re-defined shooters on consoles. I think that's a big deal. Maybe just outside the top 10 imo, (goldeneye for N64 should be in there) but at least top 25.

But Nick, why Mario Kart DS? The Mario Kart games are legendary, but I'm curious why you picked that version.

In my opinion Halo wasn't as big a breakthrough as most people like to make it out to be. All it did was take what other shooters have done, done it right and bring it to the newer generation of gamers.

I beleive Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had a much bigger impact than Halo ever did. As I said all Halo did was bring that impact to the newer generation.

Exactly. That's why: Halo <10 and Goldeneye 10>.

Still, Halo was a big step forward. It was the first fps where vehicles functioned properly, and almost all new shooters use it's health system. (Although the system of Halo 2 and up is used more frequently now.)

I mean, when was the last time you saw a health pickup in any fps? Apart from classic remakes such as Doom 3, I can't think of that many games which use the old system.

Only thing I dont know about is Castle Crashers... Never heard of it.

Sure Halo isnt the biggest thing, but it was one of the "first" console shooters with HUD (i think)

Actually, most all fpses ever used a HUD or heads up display which shows your health, ammo etc, that is what a HUD is and even Wolfenstien 3D one of the first fps ever had that. Thats not really an argument at all really.

Okay guys my list is completed! Over half of the flames in this thread are now nulled! lol!

Because the DS port includes basically all the features and a lot of the tracks from all the other games but in a handheld and multiplayer-friendly version.

AND TO ALL THE CASTLE CRASHERS HATERS:

Play the game, all the way through the freaking game, before you flame it. It's an awesome game.

Sweet combo of old and new. I like it. One quistion remains: why not pokemon leaf green, or whatever they call the remakes of red/blue? Mario Kart DS included old stuff, but improved it. Why not go for the old game with new graphics? Nostalgia, perhaps?

I guess you could, but the experience of playing the original pokemon games were better than the new ones, and that was not the case (for me anyways) with mario kart.

the pokemon games were almost identical as well...MK DS had lots of features the originals didn't though.

that's like a movie lover not liking the godfather, or saving private ryan
