Newbie Protoss Questions

    Hey all,

I've been playing the beta for a week or so now, and I just don't seem to be getting anywhere.
I just can't seem to find a good start that works 1v1. I'm typically resource starved and very vulnerable to rushes because I can't seem to find a good balance between unit building and defense building. I always feel like I'm building fast, but at the end of the game oftentimes my opponent will have double what I did.

I'd appreciate it if you experienced protoss players out there could give me some tips on what really works for you. What are some of the best units to go for? what are a waste? etc etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    try this.

9- pylon - put probe back on mineral line
    chrono nexus after pylon built
    13- gateway
    chrono nexus
meanwhile u shud still be building constant probes.
    16-pylon
    17 gateway x2, gas, cyber.
    constant probes still..

this is my average tactic, change it up abit depending. sometimes go 2nd gateway or cyber + gas earlier.

If you're resource starved early, build more probes. If it's in later game, expand. You should have somewhere between 22 and 30 probes on each base. For early game vs. rushes, esp. vs zerg, its easy for protoss to defend. Wall off almost completely and leave one tiny little. Until you're there, try to always have the nexus building a probe. hole for a zealot. Zealots tear through zerglings, but only if the zerglings can't surround them, so use the "hold position command so that it only fights on at a time. For an early opening build, I usually get a pylon near the choke at 9 supply, a gateway at 10, and then another around 12 and start pumping zealots immediately. This opener seems pretty solid and has worked out well for me. Do you have any more questions?

Thanks for the input....so one more super noobie question: When people say like, "9 supply, gateway at 10" etc....what are the number reffering to? Maybe it's just too obvious but I don't know exactly what you mean.
    Thanks!

the "9" refers to the current number of probes.

For early game, it will be your total supply.

For protoss opener, 9 pylon is almost always the best option. Build probes one at a time until the suply becomes 9, then wait for 100 minerals as the 9th probe is building, build pylon, then continue probe production.

Supply is the number in the top right. You know when you hear "You must construct additional pylons" ? That number is supply.

its best to look at the replays of your opponents or find then on youtube. The builds are usually same, but each has its purpose, so you have to adapt to what your opponent is doing, so scouting is always important in early game to find out whats hes doing, eather early rush, or going tech. By having that youl have advantage to counter your opponents strategy. And dont be affraid to loose, youv got get the feeling for the game, if you panic then your half beaten, so practice and practice, and watch replay, to see what your opponent did.
    Best of luck!
