Ok Im getting a new video card (need DX10)

so I am wondering what you guys think of a GeForce 8500GT im not rich enough for a 8800

basicly i want to know if any of you know how it would stack up aganst my current 7600GT

Im planning on getting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122029 for the slightly high clock speed for the price, and it is fanless and that is good for my system that i keep super quiet. not real sure about the memory tho (how does 512mb gddr2 compare to 256mb gddr3?)

Damn a solid state refrigerator.  FOr $82  Damn I gotta get me one of those. Money is the reason I still use a Radeon x1650

You want the one with more memory because it improves quality by storing more textures and such.

Make sure your power supply can handle that though.  How old is it and does it have PCIexpress power cords (6 pins) I didn't see any power ports on the card but they might be hidden benieth the heatsink. Regardless those things take a bit of watts nowadays

dude the reason I'm getting that is because it is $70 with the rebate. a screaming deal on my budget

getting a card with gddr3 jumps the minimum price up 40 dollars and looking at reviews most people say those fanless cards still need slotfans and that's another $10 + noise and I really don't want noise on my silent computer

what I'm talking about with the memory is the difference between gddr2 and gddr3 is...

while gddr3 fires 4 words of data, twice per memory cell cycle. gddr2 fires 4 words of data per memory cell cycle so i figure gddr3 can transfer twice as fast, but in a high quality game will being able to transfer more (512MB) be worth more then transferring fast? also with my 3gigs of memory I'm sure any extra can just go Through the memory cards.

Does this make sense to anyone but myself? I research whatever I buy so I know a lot more about it then the casual video card buyer (ooo lets buy the most expensive one!) I just try to get the best card to handle all my current and future needs for as cheap as i can.

+ If anyone knows where i can find a performance chart that will compare the ability's of a 8500gt with other video cards i would appreciate it

You said 2 for both. Which one is gddr3? Is there a second card you are comparing this to? I still stand on my previous statement though having more memory onboard is better regardless of transfer speed because onboard memory has a lower response time that main memory and does not have to deal with what the other cards are doing.

Yeah if you don't already have Vista it might be better to wait a few months. SP1 and DX10.1 are coming out Q1 2008.

@lichking i already have vista and it works fine for me

and what i mean BoP is how does 512mb of gddr2 typer memory compare to 256mb of gddr3 type memory

    its like comparing 2gb PC2 5400 ram to 1gb PC2 6400 ram

the first part (512mb and 256mb) is the amount of the memory and the second part (gddr2 and gddr3) is the speed of the memory

As I said the ammount of memory is better because it can hold more data and thus doesn't have to query the main memory as often.  Since main memory is slower evey time the card has to query the memory it is slowed down and your FPS drops.  That means the 512 is a tad faster despite the internal bus being slower.

The 512 is the one you want  The memory size is more important than the speed

Oh and I understand the the gddr 2 and 3 thing I was pointing out that your original post never mentions gddr3

Thanks it makes things more clear.

basicly as silent as a computer can get, if it is ever quiet enough to notice it is also quiet enough to hear the refrigerator running across the house

If you are using solid state coolers you pc IS a refrigerator.

I meant is it a tower box a destktop box or one of those tiny litle multimedia cubes.  Those ones always seem big on the silent fanless opperation.

And what kind of processor and memory do you have

I would love to know where you got a quiet power supply Mine whines even in low power mode when the rest of the fans are off

If it were me I'd put aside at least $300(will most likely pay more) for a next gen vid card, and probably wait till SC2's official launch date is announced, then plan to buying a card I want a few months from now about a month before it's launch. To get the best of both worlds, lowered prize and a faster card then today.

I still run a GeForce 6800, but plan up putting together a whole new rig couple months before SC2 comes out :)
