In Starcraft 2, zealots have charge, stalkers have blink, zerg gets banelings, hydralisks have much more hp... These elements all make the tanks become more and more useless.
I think that to improve the use of tanks, there should be an upgrade for tanks that reduces the time for it to switch to siege mode to tank mode. This way, the opponents can still be able to avoid siege fire while the terrans are encouraged to continue the wide use of tanks.
I think it would be reasonable for the research to reduce the time from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds only. Any suggestions?

Siege Tanks actually are much improved in SC2. They deal 50 damage and a 50 damage bonus towards armored targets. That means, they can 1 shot Marines which they couldn't in SC1. In SC1, Siege Tanks dealt a total of 70 explosive damage. That means, they deal a total of 35 damage to small units and 70 damage to big units.

Another aspect that the Siege Tanks got improved on is their firing rate during Tank mode. If you watched some of the past videos regarding Siege Tanks, you can see that they fire at a much faster rate when compared to their SC1 counterpart.

Still, they would still be very prone to zealots and stalkers right? I mean the tanks can only have one shot at them before those units are on top of them.

One volley from a tank line is going to kill a lot of them before they can close, and tank mode tanks are more powerful as well so reverting to tank mode to fight off an enemy that has closed into melee range should actually be a more viable tactic compared to just letting your tanks AOE themselves.

Plus you would have to be dumb to leave your tanks that exposed.

Well since tanks deal a lot more damage in Starcraft 2, i think they still will be used in a wide variety of ways.

That's the whole point. Tanks are meant to be long range siege units, they're meant to be weak against melee attackers.

For the record, there will never be a unit in SC2 that has no weaknesses.

Kuvasz is right. These units are supposed to counter the Siege Tank, even with the improvements it should still be vurnerable to these. Nothing more to add, really.

Thats the entire reason this weakness was put in place.

Its also been stated that the siege tank as acutely been upgraded so I really don"t see why so many insist that they need machine guns or some other crazy upgrade but who knows lol.

Sniff... OK, but when I play Starcraft 2 I'll use a whole lot less tanks than in Starcraft.
