for someone that is completely new to SC and RTS games in general, would the protoss be a good race to start with?

Ive played about 11 games as toss and ive only won about 2-3. most of these losses come from the fact that I cant seem to build units as quickly as terrans or zerg players can, and they end up just overwhelming me

so which race is kindest to new players like myself?

Terran. They're easy to pick up and be generally good with them, but it's easy to throw wild cards around with them and have a good payoff for whatever crazy tactic you do.

Protoss are a good step from there if you want to branch out. Since all units have shields, an effective increase to their health, it's a little easier to throw units at your enemy and expect a victory. Be cautious with them though, because the Protoss units are very expensive.

Zerg I still have to get decent with because personally, there's a lot to manage. Spawning all your larva whenever available, using your Queen(s) to keep up unit production and help extend your Creep along the map, and going from base to base to make sure everything is A-OK. But they're very fun once you get the basics down because nothing is more satisfying than swarming your opponent and having twice their numbers.

I think worst race to start with would definatly be zerg. Hard to manage and they have a overall-different structure (don't simply raise a building, but morph them with your drones, only 1 production-building for all units -> Hatchery). Wouldn't recommend them at first!

Protoss (my favs) are more or less as easy as terran. Advantages at protoss are the "build"-mechanic, where you take your drone, tell it to raise a building and go on mining with it instantly. Therefor the disadvantage of the expensive units gets more or less smaller towards terran. Other way around, due to the expensive units in minerals/gas and foodcount you need to keep an eye on your units!

Terran are the "allrounders" when you look at them first. Fast building-time, army size between zerg (masses) and protoss (few, but hard hitters). Really recommanded.

Final, i'd say that you should look out what suits you more, protoss or terran. Either way, it won't be easy winning instantly, you still need to work hard. For Terran there's also a guide here on the forum. If you go for protoss, id assume you look out for a 4-gate strategy (where you'll have a strong army after 6 min of the game pumping units out of 4 warpgates!)...
