I'm so stuck on this level. Does anyone know where I can find a video strategy on what people are doing? I build vikings that just get destroyed whether on ground or air. I chose both sides and still nothing. I'd rather burn all of the infestations instead of trying to wipe out the protoss mothership, can anyone help me?
I sided with the humans. My strategy was first of all to take it slow. Build up an economy. It's frightening watching that mothership rip apart those settlements, but ignore it. You'll want a 10 viking group to deal with the terror groups which start appearing. You'll want to destroy these terror groups (consisting of carriers, which is why vikings are so effective here) because then the colonists will leave behind minerals and gas, which is awesome. At the same time, an infantry force of marauders, marines, and medics should be able to start tearing through the first protoss base. Two vikings to assist them (colossi sniping) would be nice to ensure victory. Don't bother with factory units on this map. You need the gas to keep your viking group in tip top shape. Once the first nexus is destroyed, regroup. I did not expand to where the nexus was, but if you think you have time, go for it. I didn't think I had time, and in truth I didn't need any expansion. Send you infantry force and viking group against the second nexus. Remember to keep your vikings away from stalkers, while using them to destroy void rays and colossi so your infantry force can mop up the ground forces. The 2nd terror group will appear around now. If your viking group is at least 10 strong, you'll be fine. Regroup, reinforce, and repeat against the 3rd nexus. The mothership will now be flying towards the 3rd colony. This colony needs to stay alive if you want that achievement. I forget if there is another terror group. If so, your viking group should be more than large enough to take care of it. Don't forget to grab those resources after dispatching the terror group. By the way, my unit producing structures were: 1 starport with a reactor, 2 raxs. 1 with a tech-lab for marauders, 1 with a reactor for medics and marines (hopefully you've upgraded your medics to be able to do this). I also eventually built an engineering bay to upgrade my infantry attack. With the 3rd nexus destroyed, the mothership is simple. Spread your vikings out and just fire away at it. If you send your infantry against it (no reason not to), spread them out as well. If I remember correctly, the mothership will suck up your units into that vortex. Spreading them out prevents you from being too handicapped by it. I did this mission on normal difficulty. On hard you'll have more trouble, but the achievement requires only 2 colonies to survive, so you can take longer to take out the mothership. If you stick to a viking-infantry unit composition, you'll be fine. Or at least, I was.
Did you try it on hard diffilculty? I can beat the mission but with 2 colonies surviving? It's impossible (for me). You would have to take out the three Nexus extremely fast. (on hard diffilculty)
Yeah it didnt work, I couldnt make enough vikings in time, I took out the first nexus, and only got to take out the 2nd terror fleet, when I took 8 vikings to the 3rd nexus I was killed instantly. I'm switching to easy, I'm not good this this **** yet. This is my first RTS game by the way.
There's actually a pretty cheesy trick you can do. Right off the bat I took my 3 vikings to the nearest protoss base, destroyed the phase prisms there, and then landed the vikings on the high ground and they had enough range to destroy the nexus there. One base destroyed within the first 5 minutes. From there it was easy, I even screwed up really bad several times (losing lots of units in lost battles, and bad rally points getting units killed to the mothership) and I still ended winning just after the mothership destroyed the last outer settlement. And this was on HARD.
What Rushsecond said, you can take out the first nexus within the first couple minutes. I just mass produce vikings on hard difficulty and snipe out the phase prisms and colossi before rolling in on the ground.
